i have a spray can of chrome that i bought from the local automotive supply place, that would've done a better job than what they now have.

The new paint really does ruin a great sculpt.

I was planning on getting mine chromed anyways so it's not that big of a deal to me. :D

Knowing Randy Bowen, there was certainly no bait and switch.

Bowen is just like any other company, everybody has production problems once in a while. Remember the "wood handle" that SS's 1:1 Samaritan was supposed to have? :monkey3

It's been said that the paint will be simillar to the Surfer statue that came out earlier this year. The paint on that was great so the piece should still look great but the metallic paint did look better. :monkey2

From several Randy Bowen posts from staueforum

This new factory was unable to match the paint on the prototype.

The actual piece doesn't look as flat as the pics shown, but it doesn't look like the prototype either.

There will be no chrome variant from BD.

They tried other metallic paints, but they said that because of the rainy season (humidity), that type of paint wasn't curing properly and the finish was inconsistent.

We used the second picture to let you know what you're getting so you'd have time to cancel in case you didn't like the change.

Here is a new thread at statueforum with new pics of Ultron plus more info about the paint problems.

People were complaining about finger prints on the stealth Ironman, I'd suspect this was due to the curing process. Bowen probably made a smart call. Better to have people cancel now then return most of the run because of paint problems.

I'm canceling my ultron if this is the final paint.

It's definitely not a "bait and switch", but it is certainly a downgrade. However, if it is the same paint they used on the action pose Silver Surfer, it will look nice if enough light is shown on it.

meh...i never did see what the appeal to Bowen stuff is. average sculpts and the paint is just as average. this seems to be where i would draw the line if i was a Bowen collector. seems like the silver surfer also had some of this problem.

have to disagree. if you call sculpts that depict the characters as if they popped out of a comic book average then you must not be a comic fan. And paint-wise, they are no worse than what sideshow puts out on their PFs. I'd even go as far to say that the detailing on these smaller sculpts are better than what we get on most PFs which is over painted eyebrows and lazy eyes even while having the advantage of being 1/4 scale.

The surfer paint is awesome and I actually prefer that over the all chrome look.

Bowen's products are GREAT; Nothing average about his sculpts!

BD staues rock. Issues like this are rare, most of his statues come out almost exactly like the prototypes and display very well together. To say anything otherwise is just silly IMO.

I'm not happy about the paint changes on Ultron, but I have the highest respect for Randy for being so interactive with his customers. He manned up and showed the statue so people could cancel if they want, has stated exactly why this is the way it is, and is working very hard with the factory in China to get the paint changed to a more metallic silver. I've already paid for mine and will keep it. I may just end up getting it chromed(I was pretty much planning on doing that with this statue anyways).

Well said Nash. :duff

Alsa's Lightning Clear cures quite fast, like in 24 hours, or in 30 minutes if a heat lamp is used. You CAN use metal disposition paint and not have fingerprints in the clear coat.
Metal disposition paint is a four stage paint, though, as opposed to a one stage regular metallic, so the cost does go up when using it. Metal disposition= gloss black, clear, metal misting on clear, then final protective clear. Metallic paint= just metallic paint, on e type of paint, unless you put a clear coat over it.

I agree with Nash. The Bowen sculpts are excellent. The proportions are spot on in every sculpt I've seen. The DETAIL isn't as great as some other work, but it DOES look like the characters do in the comics. They just don't look like real life versions of the characters. Frankly, the comic look has a certain appeal for the purist. The only problem with the Bowen stuff compared to the SS stuff is the price for what you get. If the Bowen statues were $45 a piece, which frankly, is what I think they are worth, I would be collecting. Problem is, at $180 a sculpt, I expect more from them. The detail of the sculptures just doesn't justify the Bowen price tag. By contrast, $150 for the new Rogue comiquette is a MUCH better value, as in twice the value.
