Hmmmm I really enjoyed this series back in the day. Hope the reboot is just as good.

Nervously excited about this. On the one hand I'd love to know what Buffy would be doing all these years later but on the other....so many of these revivals end up being 'be careful what you wish for'' cautionary tales. The biggest example being the Star Wars sequel trilogy. And Picard only just, just salvaged itself with its third season.

If nothing else though I hope it brings merchandising attention back on the original show and Angel. I'd take some good figures of a few of the mains at today's standards.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

It will be ruined. You all know this is true.

Knowing Hollywood's current position/intent, the stories will never be nuanced and balanced like before -- they will be heavy-handed morality tales full of misunderstood "monsters" and other "odd beings" that are all just misunderstood or misrepresented.

This show will be a podium to preacher from.

If I'm reading it correctly, it's a continuation rather than a reboot. Or maybe that's a distinction without a difference, I guess I'm just thinking more of a remake, and it doesn't sound like this will be that.

Obviously they're going to run into issues right off the bat since Angel saw the world being overrun by demons in its finale, so it will be interesting to see them tackle the ramifications of that. Presumably, Buffy unleashing more slayers into the world will help. Fingers crossed.

To be fair the original and Angel dealt with misunderstood monsters.

Not sure this works without Whedon. He really brought out the best in the characters, well in the earlier seasons before the characters simply ran out of rope to find new development. Also, BTVS, there are major elements that fit the time and place when it was released ( pre social media era, pre Tinder, pre normalized widespread narcissism, back when going to college was still expected of young people out of high school as an almost obligation, etc, etc)

As much as Whedon gets hit hard now with his scandals/controversies, he had an innate ability to take a performer with clear limitations, and make then shine on screen. That was pretty unique and rare as a consistent skill set he had. There's also a lot of John Hughes homage in his writing, and again, not sure how that translates in 2025 and beyond. Well, be interesting to see what happens.

Quite possibly. I mean Buffy was doing progressivism before the term woke was ever a thing but it might all hit differently now in the culture war environment.

Yeah if it's about Buffy and it has SMG it's a continuation. Reboot is the wrong word, it's a revival.

I can't remember, was what happened in the Angel finale supposed to be worldwide? I thought it was just Los Angeles. Did comics ever tell us what happened after that? Who lived and who died etc. Would those comics even be acknowledged by this new show.....

Welp,
I agree that the odds of this being a worthy sequel are distant at best.

The storyline of the comics is pretty interesting in that the events of S7 Buffy + S5 Angel reveal magic + demons to the world and its a whole new paradigm for the world and Buffyverse characters - so if they follow that I would be fairly happy.

I do see the potential pitfalls here, Buffy was political and touched on a lot of issues and Buffy herself is a 90s feminist icon for a reason, the problem though is that Buffy wisely used its mythology as metaphor and I somehow feel that new writers wont be that subtle.
Look at the reboot of Charmed for example, which billed itself as a new feminist reboot of the show = thereby completely missing the point that the original show was feminist and also used its villains and mythology as a metaphor for the issues it wished to discuss.

As @Kebron says, Angel in particular often had misunderstood monsters which acted as analogues for varying real-life concerns, but because the writing was good and the mythology rich and engaging, it often made it so that these issues were discussed and digested in a manner that didnt break immersion into the show and world with an overt feeling of "pulpit preaching".

I watched the whole Buffy series. Pre-streaming era that was quite a feat. I saw a fair bit of 'Angel' but didn't know about the finale.

I don't have high hopes for this new series. I fear it may have been too well situated in its time and place. Even 'Angel' never hit the same way. Would love to be wrong of course.

Precisely.

It runs the risk of being overt and preachy... like when cartoons literally had their epilogue start with: well what did we learn today, kids?

From what I remember L.A gets sucked into Hell/The Senior Partner's domain and disappears on Earth, its disappearance + the destruction of Sunnydale + a vampire murdering someone on tv all in quick succession exposes magic and demons to the world.

The panic of which has the world governments [led by remnants of the Initiative and a few old villains] into conflict with both demons but also the new Watchers and Slayers council.

BUT

There is potentially good news ladies and gentlemen!

A new series may ignite new interest in the IP - meaning a greater chance of companies making new Buffyverse figures, statues, memorabilia, steelbooks and new film quality updates?

Spoilers ahead if anyone cares about the comics.

From what I remember Wesley comes back as a Ghost, Gunn becomes a Vampire. Angel goes kind of evil or something and is this masked flying guy trying to stop Buffy from bringing all the Slayers together. Giles and Faith break off from the Scoobs to look for Slayers. Dawn and Xander become a thing.

Comics wise I thought the recent reboot from Boom had some interesting differences from the show, like Xander becoming a vampire.

I'd love for the series to get some sort of remaster or upscaling. It's hard to get my daughter interested in watching these "old shows" cause the video quality looks so bad.

It's a reboot in a sense that it's a fresh start but within the continuity of the original show where new viewers will be able to hop on board without experiencing the original.

I guess like the new God of War games, you don't need to have played the original games but you get a much more rich experience if you have.

Soft reboot.
