Actualy if this happened in your house, and you shot the guy (dead or not) you would be spending at least one night in jail. After you would be released on bond, then you would have to go to court to fight your charges, then possibly back to jail. There is no self defence laws, or castle laws in Canada

In Canada we are expected to run out the back door and call police, and not fight back. If we do fight back and shoot the criminal, he survives, he is then considered the victim and can sue. Shoot him dead and you are considered a vigilante who overreacted, because you sould have fled you home and avoided confrontation.
That's why these situations are so bad, it's lose, lose.
