My kids were freaking put this morning when they saw this bird eating another on my garage. I had seen it yesterday on my front tree, but couldn't snap a picture of it. I live in Northern New Jersey and have never in seen one of these land in town. Can anyone confirm if it's a hawk? If so , why is it in the city? Will it now continue to hang out on or near my property?

gorgeous. some people would feel very lucky to have that on their property. I'm not sure if they get territorial and attack kids though.

Does look like a Redtail.
Hawks are awesome. if you're fortunate you will get to see him a lot. Their territories are huge, so you may not.
Just keep the kittens and puppies inside... :monkey1

No kittens or puppies, just worried about my little kids. Should I be?

We've got plenty of those in my mountainous neighborhood.
They can't lift a 40lb child. :D

Also hard to tell the size of that falcon without something to use as reference. But if that's some type of sparrow, pidgeon, or equivalent, that's actually a small falcon.

You've got nothing to worry about.
Tell your children everything is fine. It's just nature taking it's course.
Oh, and get them one of these:

I don't think it's a redtail or falcon- looks like a goshawk to me.

Many species of raptors often visit cities, if they don't already live there, for all of the opportunities- mice, rats and pigeons.

And although they are skillful hunters they won't risk getting themselves injured, so you don't have to worry about your pets. They are well aware of what another predator could potentially do to them. Only a starving eagle or very large hawk would take that risk and that's not what you have going on here!

And you don't have to worry about your kids either- raptors are extremely afraid of humans.

And yes- I am a confirmed bird nerd. :D

I wound not worry about the kids. Remeber predators will very rarley attack anything they dont know they can kill, only exception is a desperate predator they will take more chances.

I have a handful Red Tail Hawks in my area and the best part is we don't have a lot of pigeons. They also have lots of other food sources as I live right along a Mtn.
