Captain EO Returns to Disneyland Today

FEBRUARY 23, 2010

MJ fans lined outside Disneyland today to be the first to see the "re-debut" of Captain EO, the 17 minute science fiction themed musical that MJ started in, which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive produced George Lucas.

According to the LA Times:
The film stars Jackson as a captain leading a crew of aliens, robots and "fuzzball" on a spaceship on a mission to deliver a gift to a wicked alien witch played by Anjelica Huston.

A Disney spokeswoman told KTLA that there was no timeline for how long the show would run, but said it would stay for as long as it remained popular.

I gathered a few reports, check it out!

Captain Eo's return:
Captain EO will of course be the big news story today, with Disneyland playing host to five hundred invited Michael Jackson fans (who will be allowed in ahead of those camping out overnight in front of the park) as well as plenty of invited media there to capture footage for countless blow-dried TV anchors to chuckle over during tonight's local newscasts up and down the West Coast.
And with that grand opening, the folks in Team Disney Anaheim (TDA) will finally breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed like such a simple plan when it was hatched last summer; return Captain EO to its original 3-D theater in Tomorrowland and put the tired old Honey I Shrunk The Audience show out of its misery. The whole thing was originally supposed to be a quick and easy 90 day turnaround, with the show opening at Disneyland by October in time for the popular HalloweenTime festivities.
al022310a.jpg
But then we told you about it, the lawyers got involved once they got wind of things, and some of the executives up in Burbank got cold feet over a potential public backlash regarding Michael Jackson's death. The whole plan was nearly derailed and cancelled on several different occasions in the fall of 2009, and Walt Disney World's (WDW) management backed out of a later proposal to also bring the show to Epcot, after deciding the modest cost to transform the theater was too much money to spend on what they consider Orlando's less involved tourists. (Tokyo Disneyland's management is taking a wait and see approach, after already committing to big-buck upgrades currently under construction in both DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland.)
And that just left TDA, bravely forcing the Captain EO proposal to completion at Disneyland, knowing that at the very least they've got just over a million local Annual Passholders who will want to see the show out of curiosity and then hopefully buy one of the EO t-shirts that TDA rushed into production just a few months ago.

Thanks for the pics Kuzeh!

Im sure if they make a Captain EO Vinylmation he will be in one of the Park series. :)

I'm going this Friday. I can't wait to see it. Plus, I'll end up buying a shirt for me and my wife. ;)

It would be bad a$$ if Disney offered Captain EO on 3-D Blu-ray and 3-D DVD! :D

What I wrote to Disney:

Hi Disney,

My name is Nick, I am 26 years old and confined to a wheelchair
with Cerebral palsy so I have never been and am not able to get
to your parks to see Captain EO
on the Big Screen. I remember watching it on TV as a child and
LOVED IT! :) I still LOVE the film to this day! :) I wish you
guys would do a Hologram Wristwatch of
the Captain EO movie poster, Much like the old Captain EO pins. :) Is there ANY chance of Disney
offering Captain EO on 3-D Blu-
ray and 3-D DVD, So that people
like me who cannot get to your parks can enjoy Michael's and Disney's Masterpiece forever?

So fans who are not able to get to your parks, How do we buy the new
Captain EO Merch?

Thanks so much

Nick

Hey The Monster, try calling DeliverEARS: (800) 362-4533

It's an in park service for ordered merchandise from Disneyland and having it shipped. While they say that it is only available for in-park guests only, I bet if you give them a call, get a nice cast member on the phone and explain your situation, they might make an exception. They are usually very helpful and accommodating, so I would give it a shot!

Also, they didn't say it was NOT coming to dvd, they just have not been told yet... It will probably play in the park through the end of the year depending on popularity, so the time to ask again would be after it has been removed from the parks again. The whole point of bringing it back is to get more people into the park, so they will not offer the movie for sale when it is still there. After it's gone, they may try to milk it even more by offering a dvd/blu-ray for sale. It'd make sense to me!

I may try that, thanks. :D My good buddy Kuzeh may be going to see the show in March, and has offered to pick up my Captain EO Merch for me.:D:chew I hope that if a 3-D dvd/blu-ray of this film does come out,
They have the making of Captain EO in 3-D on it as well.:D
