If check engine light is on looks like you need a major service.
I would change
Oil/oil filter
air filter
fuel filter
spark plugs/leads
dizzy cap and rotorbutton.

Change:

Air Filter
Fuel Filter
PCV Valve

Also... you might consider a new Distributor Cap, Spark Plugs, and Plug wires.

DO NOT pay a mechanic to do this. You can buy and do all of this yourself without much trouble. If you have to, buy the Hayne's Manual specific to your car.

:lecture

These are the first things I replace whenever I have a fuel consumption or acceleration problem.

I gotta know Evil, you don't like Stangs or Dodge, well, what do you prefer? Say I were to line up a Mustang, a Camaro and a Challenger.
new or classics??? new ones i say none. classics wise i'd go with a camaro.
~~oh this might be obvious but have you downgraded the octane you use??? or swapped gas stations??

I know their are a few people on this board who love cars as much as they love collecting (or more) .

I have a question. 2 things happened in my car at the same time. 1) My car is not accelerating like it should... feels like gas isn't getting into the accelerator. Or maybe transmission issues? 2) My "check engine" light as come on.

Could this be an issue with the fuel pump or does it sound like my transmission may have issues?

Thanks for any help I can get.

Mines doing the same thing but my check engine light doesn't come on. My car sometimes howls too as you accelerate. I'm due for an oil change so hopefully they can figure it out when they do that.

Good luck!

Oh I was referring to todays models but yeah nothing beats the old classics. My younger brother knows WAY more about past muscle cars but if had to pick my all time favorite it would be a 68' or 69' Charger. 69' Shelby Cobra Mustang being a very close second.

:rock :rock i think i'm biased towards camaro because my dad had one when i was a kid and that thing was the coolest thing ever (to a 10 year old it sure is) but then someone ran a light or stop sign and totaled the car. my dad was so pissed about it--- because i think my mom forced him into the next car which was a station wagon.
~~if you are looking at getting something new like an '08 or '09 i recommend a Mitsubisihi Lancer Evolution or Subaru WRX / STI (biased because i have an STI) you can get a fairly new '08 for about $25k with 0% financing and their performance is pretty comparable towards a mustang or challenger. also, the insurance is cheaper because its listed as a "sports wagon" and easy to get in and out of because of the 4 doors.

Might be that a cylinder is not working. If you are going up hill and dont get the normal accelleration, it might be just that.

Of course it could also be an oxygen sensor or your fuel injectors are clogged assuming that the car isn't carbureted and it's got a fuel injection system on it.There are lots of thiings that could be causing the problems. My suggestion would be first before spending all the money to replace what people think could be wrong with it to take it to a local parts store like Autozone or Oreilly's and have them run a free check and see what the computer codes out as the problem. Then you can figure out what you need to buy and replace.

My nephew-in-law works for the local Autozone which is always a big help. But yes they will bring a coder out to your car hook it up and tell you what it reads as being wrong with your car. There are also lots of cars that the check engine light automatically comes on as soon as you hit a certain mileage, usually after your warranty expires.Having them code it is much easier than spending money you might not need to spend at the moment.A tune-up is recommended every so often though.Hope this has been of some help.
