Carded Figures: Clamshell discoloring

I stopped collecting carded figures like the muppets, mcfarlane, simpsons and others several years ago and put them into storage in my house. I have since unpacked them for display again. after unpacking, I found the clamshell on a few random figures discolored and became yellow. How did this happen, and why did it happen only to a few carded figures and not all of them? Everything was stored in a temperature controlled environment.

Sometimes the clamshell is just a different shade than the rest of the packaging.
