I think the main reason behind inconsistencies with Sideshow products is that there is not a full-time Sideshow production person who's at the factory every day. They go over there a few times a year, but unless someone is there consistently then you are going to have these consistency issues with QC, because often times they're not discovered until it's too late in the production process. This is Product/Project Management 101. But I understand that's not the business model for Sideshow and isn't in their current structure or budget, unfortunately.
Conversely, being in HK (and obviously speaking the native language of those in the factories) is what gives Hot Toys a huge leg up in this area. This is yet another reason why Sideshow becoming more and more involved with Hot Toys can only be a good thing for collectors.
