Don't worry guys. I may make mine available in a very limited run. I'm discussing different options and ways about protecting the integrity and ways to prevent recastings, such as prepainted sculpts etc.

Sounds awesome. BTW did you ever say what you are going to use your painted head on?

I totally agree! I would absolutely love a copy of Andy's fantastic Bale. I really hope you're able to offer some to us freaks Wofford.

Kind of disappointed Great1 didn't include me off the bat [pardon the pun] as it was my idea to try, but at least Wofford may still consider sharing. :monkey5

I'd gladly take a prepainted sculpt or sign whatever you want me to in order to get one of these Bale sculpts.

I would also be very interested in a Bale sculpt Wofford! I'll keep my eyes open for more info.

I would be very interested in getting a cast if it becomes available. Count me in.

Not to sound disrespectful, but coming from someone who has had lots of commissioned original sculpts done and have sold casts of those sculpts, there are only a few ways to keep recasters at bay. One is to never let copies of the sculpt out of your sight, second only sell them to people that can be trusted and lastly is to make affordable casts available in plentiful numbers. No amount of ingenuity, pre-painted casts or whatever else you can think of will keep those evil bastards at bay. They will strip paint off or foil whatever plan you come up with.

This is purely an example as I don't know what your plan may be, but if you offer 20 limited edition castings at $50-75 a piece it only encourages a recaster to get his greedy hands on one and sell it to everyone that didn't get one for $10-15 dollars. Educating buyers who are unaware that the people selling knock-offs on ebay are wrong and pricepoint is key to defeating them. Why would someone want to buy a cheaply done recast at $15 if they can buy an original for $20?

Just my 2 cents.

Mike

No matter how low or high the price will be (even if originals are given away for free) recasts will show on eBay.
There is no solid method to elimate this ugly problem.

Just my thoughts

You have to eliminate their customer base. If there is no market for recasts, they will quit recasting. Reasons there is a customer base for recasters are:

The buyers don't know that recasting is wrong.
Original castings are too highly priced.
Original castings are no longer available.

I'm not dumb enough to think that recasting will ever end, but I think there are ways to keep it at bay.

If and when you decide to make any available, please do keep me in mind as well. Thanks! :D

Heya Mike! Good to see you 'round these parts. :)

I agree with Mike's points about recasting. I love the prepainted head idea, it's a very cool thing to offer... But it really doesn't have any bearing on recast prevention (a painted head can be molded exactly the same way as any other object, silicone doesn't react to the paint). Also, I think Mike's point about selling MORE copies at a cheaper price is good, in my experience (at least in the garage kit field) that seems to curb recasting a bit more often than the opposite method. It's the super limited and/or expensive kits that recasters find the most profitable. One of the ways I 'tried' to deal with recasting potential when I offered my Craig head was to come up with a ballpark number of heads I wanted to release in the run, and take preorders before shipping the heads. By the time the heads shipped, I already had all the orders I really cared to get from the head. Will the head still be recast? Maybe... But if it does, it hurts me a little less (financially speaking anyway). Of course the real evil of recasting lies beyond the financial aspect, no artist wants to see his/her work treated like that... But as Mike said, the only way to completely avoid it would be to keep the piece as a one-of-a-kind. However, since I'd often rather share my work with fellow collectors, I find the preorder method to be a fairly useful option.

Personally, unless Wofford is genuinely interested in selling some of these heads for financial reasons (which is obviously understandable), I'd recommend just holding out for the Longbow sculpt. That sculptor is fantastic, and the portrait looks to be shaping up nicely. Should make an awesome custom. I admire Wofford for having so much integrity regarding his Bale head, I think it's awesome that he's keeping it as an original for various reasons. But if he decides to make castings available for sale of course I would support that too.

I think another way is for wofford to personally "choose" who he sells his recast head to. That way he knows that he has at least some sort of trust between that person not to recast and resell it. Of course it is not 100% foolproof, but it is better than selling it to any average joe out there.

With that said I hope Im one of those that he chooses.
