I'm gettting psyched after finishing Eldest. Both books were above my expectations, both Eragon and Eldest. This epic is set to have three movies based on the books by Christopher Paolini.

I know I know and I'm sure it wont compare to LOTR's but based on the books it does seem promising. Dragons and more dwarves anyone?

John Malkovich will be starring as the evil emperor, last of the fabled dragon riders until a young boy named Eragon finds a dragons egg in a forrest.
:D

I read the first book, and it was good, but very derivitive of the LOTR trilogy
to the point that it was distracting seeing all the similarities. I can't fault
the author as LOTR was obviously a direct influence, but the maps and a lot
of the text seemed to be copying the ideas and concepts of JRRT.

That said, I'd gladly see the film if it appears to be good. Plus I'd also gladly
get a statue and/or bust of the dragon, as you can never have too many dragons.....

JS :)

I think that one of the things that helped LOTR was that they cast strong actors who were not all household names. When I saw Aragorn and Gandalf and Legolas, I saw Aragorn and Gandalf and Legolas. When I see John Malkovich, I will be seeing John Malkovich. Same reason that I am so glad that they didn't cast Sean Connery in LOTR. You would just be thinking "James Bond" the whole time.

Of course, both times that I saw Fellowship of the Ring in theaters, Elrond's "Welcome to Rivendell..." was followed by somebody in the audience finishing the welcome with "...Mr. Anderson." You get somebody too familiar to audiences from their other work and it can be distracting.

I think that when I watch Eragon and see John Malkovich speak, I won't hear him say anything but: "Hi folks, I needed the money."

Hell yeah I'm excited about this movie!!

I agree with JS, Tolkien did have an influence on these novels as it did with DragonLance, Forgotten Realm, etc etc.

May your swords stay sharp! :viking

I have heard of these books by Christopher Paolini. The third of the trilogy will be out towards the end of the year if i'm not wrong according to what I see on Amazon. My little brother has these books.

But I've no idea before this that a movie was to be made. If the movies were to have those big scale war/fighting scenes, the more I've to watch it!

Haven't hear about it yet. Let's see a trailer first!

Let's see the dragon!

I've been meaning to read the first book for quite a while now, just haven't gotten around to it.

I'm very much looking forward to this, and hope they they do a good job with it. Please, please give us a convincing looking dragon!

Though I'm more looking forward to the first of the "His Dark Materials" films due to come out in 2007.

Hey, Debbie!!! :wave

I'll probably see "Eragon", but haven't read the book. Most of the reviews I've read weren't kind, and I passed. If I like the movie, I may pick up the books. :monkey1

Never heard of it but definitely interested.

Now if only someone would do the "Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" into a film(s)...

I dunno, Tom. I think the enjoyment of watching a familiar actor is wondering what will he do this time? That's why I'm still a sucker for Jack Nicholson. And becoming a sucker for Philip Seymour Hoffman. I've never rushed out to see a movie because it had a cast of unknowns. That's what all the Canadian shows on cable are for. :D

Suppose Peter Jackson had passed on Elijah Wood because the audience might say, there's Huck Finn, or Sean Astin because the LOTR audience might remember him from The Goonies, or Ian McKellan because people might think, there's the dirty old Nazi from Apt Pupil.

Go for the blank slate and sometimes you get Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, other times you get...the new Dumbledore. He was great as the Singing Detective, but he can't erase the memory of Richard Harris in the part. They should have gone for Peter O'Toole if you ask me. I wouldn't have been thinking about My Favorite Year or The Ruling Class. Those memories would have had me thinking, I wonder what O'Toole will do with Dumbledore...

Ok time for my Christopher Paolini story:

I was walking into the book/music/movie store and there straight across from the entrance was this little skinny guy dressed up down to the "T" in a squire outfit. The hat, tights I mean everything he jumps out of his chair "Would you like to buy my book?" He tells me he will sign it and all and I ask how much "$25 bucks" I say no thanks but then a group of girls walk by snickering at him. So I stay a couple more minutes just chatting with the kid about his book, I had to give him credit takes a lot for some one to dress up the way he was dressed to sale a book. And at the same time being pretty motivated doing it when at that time nobody really knew him or his book. And he looked pretty comical and all.

But I relise now I should of trusted that gut feeling and purchased the book and had him sign it. O well I most likely would of sold it.

The Film Rights to The Covenant books were Optioned a while back (news broke in December 2004), not sure how far the project has progressed since then.

Edit
Did a bit of searching and found this thread that quotes Stephen Dondaldson and John Orloff (the screenwriter involved) on the progress of the project.

Current situation.
Not Good, No big studio interested and Donaldson himself going off the idea (though that would not affect the project going ahead).
