From my memory, Buffy was a very successful show. Once it switched to UPN, the quality dropped, it became kind of a depressing show, and people stopped watching it.

The WB didn't want to renew it and felt that it had run its course. Hindsight being 20/20, they were right.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. The show might have gotten more depressing, but there was nothing wrong with the quality.

IMHO it got better while it got depressing. It was like a breath of fresh air in the last season when everything seemed to be going to ____. I think the show benefited from that.

I just remember Buffy talking about how she was in heaven, and her friends ripped her away from being somewhere she was finally happy. Her mom dying, and she was struggling to keep the house, then Tara being shot and Willow going bad and killing Warren.

And of course, the Anya leaving Xander.

That was mostly just season 6, but it was all dark stuff. . . it just turned me off. The last 2 seasons just had a different feel than the previous 5. When I remember scenes from the last 2 seasons in my head, I think of a flat color palette, all the scenes look kind of golden and muted. Seasons 4 and 5 make me think of more colorful things. Maybe it's just the difference in the way the two networks broadcast the episodes.

The last 2 seasons weren't as visually appealing to me.

I think it's a fair assessment that it got darker and yes, the stuff did hit the fan. I clearly think this was intentional to represent the fact that we all thought High School was hell while we were there, but looking back it was much easier than moving on to the "real world" of adulthood.

ps. Something Sexy, I really miss the Fisher Stevens icon :(

It seems my posts have got the thread off-track. I still enjoyed Buffy, and the idea of a New Buffy is bad. The series really said all that needed to be said, and a "new generation" is just going to be the same house with new curtains.

Haha, me too actually. It will be back SOON!

Agreed.

You can thank Twilight for this. Studios are scrabbling to come up with teen vampire properties. If only these people knew how much Twilight "borrows" from Buffy they all might have been watching the show back in the day and made it as successful as it deserved to be.

Buffy was pretty successful in it's own right. For a show to last 7 seasons despite being cancelled at one point proves that. Not to mention it had a pretty decent spinoff show that lasted 4 season. (I prefer Angel to Buffy, but that's just my preferences)

It was never a huge hit. It was good with some demographics though. That being said it had seven seasons and a clear ending. It was not cancelled. I never said it should have run longer, I was happy with what we got. What I am saying is that the show was so good it should have been huge, If all the people pumping money into Twilight had watched it it would have been huge. I know so many people that love vampire stuff and the romantic elements of human girl/Vampire boy that would have loved Buffy but never even gave it a shot because of it's name alone.

Nothing? I assumed it was still being released. Have you checked amazon?

I haven't decided if I will buy the DVD yet. I have the same feeling I had when I heard of the naughty illegal Buffy fancomics that were shown online for a fee; "Why should I buy it?"

Actually, I would be more willing to pay for that naughty comic...
