NBC's inability to run a competent network is probably the best thing Community has going for it. Community's "poor" ratings were actually the same ratings that the average NBC sitcom was getting during Community's hiatus. Community averaged a 1.6, the median rating was just shy of 1.7.

So even though NBC is clearly terribly run, even they must see the logic of "extremely loyal and dedicated fan base means that worst case scenario, Community's ratings will not get worse, but stay at the 'average' rating".

The only downside to the news is finding out P&R will be on a 5 week hiatus. Although I don't think that is due to Community's return, so it's not an either or situation.
