My wife wants to get a new Dell. For those who are in the know about computers what would you recommend.....

1:AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core

or....

2:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400 (2.13GHz, 1066 FSB)

Aside from this the PC's are identical. Could someone shed some light on the difference between the two(pros and cons).

Before anyone says " Screw PC get Mac", its her money and she wants a Dell, so case closed on that.

But any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

it really depends King.

What is she going to use it for?? Any special software or what not??

In my personal opinion and preference, I would say go for the Intel. This PC has a dual core Intel processor in it and it is fantastic. It also depends on what her needs are for a computer. Like, I have heard that Intel processors are better for all around use on an everyday PC. I have heard that AMD is better for gaming, however. Intel is also ahead of AMD in the speed of their processors. I have talked to a guy who works for Intel and is developing a new processor now. If you want, I could always ask him for you. Anyways, I hope some of this helps.

Nothing too special. She use a lot of Microsoft Word and and stuff for school, other than that its mostly internet viewing and down loading music.

What exactly is the difference between the two:confused:

No, no gaming at all. She just wants a fast computer that doesn't take forever to load her programs. If the Intel runs faster, thats probably what we'll go with.

And if you could ask, that would be cool, any additional info couldn't hurt.

Then I would personally suggest that she goes with the Intel. That will suit her needs the most. I will email this guy and get back to ya and get some more info to ya.

Yeah, its looking that way.

King what are the speeds of the two that you are looking at. I see the Intel speed but not the AMD speed.

This is probally the best Hardware site there is. The link is for a comparison of all different CPUs. Based on that the Intel is faster. But with that being said it is also brand new where the AMD is well tested and broken in. This is Intel first CPU to outpreform a AMD cpu in over two years, and not for Intel best efforts. My only concern would be that Intel may have tryed to push the limits to far to finally get back on top. I think for what your wife plans to do both will be more then fast enough cpus and couldnt go wrong with either.

The Dimension E521 and the Dimension E520.

As far as I can tell they are identical except the E521 has the AMD and the E520 has the Intel.

Just doing a quick look if you get the Intel E640 to have the same price you have to get the highest AMD which is the 5000+. They seem to be fairly close but the Intel is faster. If you are getting a warrenty then either are great but if you not getting it I would go with the AMD since I know its reliable and the Intel is way to new to know at this point.
Hope that helps.

Also is a 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive and 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz- 2DIMMs good?!?!?!?

Sorry if its a dumb question, but I dont really know crap about computers.

Thanks.
