I was doing some packing and noted the Sauron I bought off eBay has several things that make me nervous. 1) the box has printing on one side only, the sides and back are plain, 2) the sauron base does not list a number, it just says blank /9500. The piece looks legit to me though, not an obviously bad cast or paint job that I can tell. So is this a recast?

Edit: so the bottom of the box does have printing which all looks offocial but it does not have an edition number or even a space for the edition number. The piece also came in an outer box that looks official. I guess I am hoping back when they did runs of 9500 that this was a factory extra or something.

Does the base have a # on the bottom of it? It sounds like its a factory extra maybe but I can't remember what all the box had one it. I could have sworn the box had printing on all side.

The base has the space for a number just no number there, All the other info is included though, the sculptor, etc. I looked for it maybe being an AP but alas no.

I dont think and doubt very much that it's a recast because they made so many of em...

Some boxes only came with a photo on the front, but i can't remember if Sauron was one of them. Probably. ;)

Yeah, I can't remember what ones did. Boromir and the Cave Troll are two I remember off the top of my head.

Phew, thanks guys this is making me feel better. Hard to recall the days of 9500 ES but I can certainly see them being lazy about numbering them. If not for this missing number I wouldnt think twice about it. Also it did not come from a Chinese seller. And as some pointed out above, why bootleg a huge and heavy statue that barely breaks its retail price point.

I don't think we'll see a 9500 ES ever again on pieces like these. It could have been a replacement piece that got out.

Yeah, sounds like you got a replacement piece. If a damaged piece was returned to Sideshow, I assume they would number the replacement at that point to match the broken one. That happened to me with the KISS Paul Stanley PF; the base was numbered to match the piece I returned, but the sticker on the bottom of the box read _/200.

What's been said so far is correct.
The Sauron box was just all black with a picture of him on the front, no text was on the back like the smaller statues.
x :peace
