I think some easily over looked areas of any display are the shelves.
You can replace common glass shelves with custom shelves for very little money and a little effort
Here are some shelves from my War Machine Cabinet
These shelves cost less then $10 each. I modified the original shelves I made for this cabinet by creating the cut out pattern with a jig saw and a router. The wiring for the light runs in a groove on the top of the shelf. The expanded metal mesh was bought locally from a Grill Maker for about $7 per shelf and it covered up the light and the wire and while providing an industrial looking floor surface it also allow the light from above to filter through the entire cabinet.
I used Hardi-Board tile backer board for the back drop and to help cover up some of the natural wood color, it has a very cool pattern that could also work for a shelf.
If you want to dress up your cabinets, head to Lowes or Home Depot and just browse all of the materials they have an think about how they would look if they were used as a shelf, you would be surprised at what you can find.
