Cancelled movies? No theatrical releases for years at a time? More of a focus on TV series instead? Um... that's basically the same thing as when Lucas was in charge.
Having cancelled his own trilogy of movies 40 years ago, and abandoning other rumored SW projects, let's not forget that this was the onscreen output during George's 35+ years in charge:
1977 ANH
1978 Holiday Special (TV)
1980 ESB
1983 ROTJ
1984 Caravan of Courage (TV)
1985 Battle for Endor (TV)
1985 Droids (cartoon)
1985-86 Ewoks (cartoon)
1999 TPM
2002 AOTC
2003 ROTS
2003 Clone Wars (cartoon)
2008-13 The Clone Wars (cartoon)
I can't speak for anyone else, but I would've been happier if most of that list had never seen the light of day, even when the pickings were slim. And, yes, I can say the same exact thing about Disney SW. As with most fictional properties, less has proven to be (almost always) more.
I'm hoping all the cancelled film projects are the result of knowing how crucial it is for theatrical SW to come back with a bang and not a whimper. If a project is seeming too mediocre, it shouldn't move forward. Simple.
If the next movie feels like nothing more than the latest product off the assembly line, or just an extension of the D+ shows, that'll be much worse for business than bad publicity from cancelled projects. They need to get this next one right, but that can't happen without first finding someone who has a genuine story vision and a desire for something more ambitious than just expanding the lore.
