Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!
I think a lot of it with the animated style of these figures is also articulation impacring aesthetics.
If they say had a thigh cut like the current Masters of the Universe Classics then you'd lose the sleek line of their legs. Too many on the ankles and wrists you get areas prone to breakage - I am surprised they've managed (in most cases) to strike a good balance. I'd take "limited" articulation in favour of aesthetics any day. They're hardly "statues".
Saying that there are a few missteps. Why Demon doesn't have ankle rockers to allow him to stand like the turnaround is beyond me.
THANK YOU!!
That's what I've always thought about articulation in action figures. Even with figures based on live-action characters.
First, I get that "action" figures mean they are and should be posable. But when it comes to figures with sculpted clothes, the points of articulations are visible (of course!) and, therefore, the aesthetics are forever gone, thanks to the "lines" etc.
That's not the case with Hot Toys, for example, since the POAs are hidden with fabric clothes.
I remember when I got my very first "super posable" figure: a 2002 Toy Biz Spiderman, from the movie (the one with the gargoyle). Althought awesome to pose, his aesthetics were completely destroyed.
One of the things about Spidey that I think is a trademark is how sleek and clean his body looks with the costume. And the several points of articulation ruined the look of the figure, IMO.
Thank God, Toy Biz made two other Spidey figs from the movie with less articulation, which preserved the aesthetics.
Regarding this line and animated figs, the situation is even more complicated, since cartoons tend to be very sleek and clean.
Especially with female characters.
Zatanna, for example. One of her trademarks is how long and gorgeous her legs are. And DCC NAILED them. Her ankles are so well sculpted.
If they had given her legs several POA, such iconic trademark would have been ruined, no doubt.
Regarding Clayface, the fact that his body is completely uneven, as oposed to the other characters, POA wouldn't have ruined his aesthetics. However, he's a heavy figure, especially on the upper body. So, I'd say DCC chose to not give his knee POAs in order to prevent them from getting loose with time.
