The Director of The "Deer Hunter", Michael Cimino has died. Sometimes you only have one story to tell... but it was a great one. Love "The Deer Hunter", fantastic film.

I recently gave Heavens Gate another chance after picking up the remastered version out of curiosity. It's still over long, scenes seem to amble on for no good reason and without any resolution, the characters are so thinly sketched they're practically see through, but **** the whole thing looked so goddamn gorgeous I found myself being suckered in and just going along for the ride. I was surprised to enjoy it so much bearing in mind it's (undeserved, in my opinion) reputation as one of the biggest stinkers of all time. A real shame the fallout from that particular movie brought his career crashing to a premature halt because, whatever else they may say about the man as a filmmaker, it cannot be denied Cimino had an absolutely fantastic eye.
