Re: Detolfs in Aus?

If Ikea is unwilling to deliver, then you might not be able to get the actual Detolf display cabinets as I believe they might be an Ikea-exclusive item. There are probably similar cabinets made by a variety of different companies, but the level of quality will probably vary quite a bit, not to mention the cost.

One good alternative is to buy cheap aquariums and simply stack them on top of each other.

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

Well Ikea own the designs. So you are unlikely to find them outside of Ikea. I couldn't find anything similar for the same sort of price - all I could locate was shop fitting quality cabinets costing $1000's.

My collection is in Billy's with Morebo alumium framed doors - it actually looks quite swish. But I only collect 1/6th scale - I'm not sure how they would hold up to multiple PF's.

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

Not sure if this is a viable option or not, but why don't you just rent a small van, do a road trip to the closest Ikea location and just stock up on Detolfs? If you do it all in one day, the cost of the rental should be negligible.

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

We're a big country - about the same size as continental USA, driving there and back in a day might not be possible.

Where in Australia are you? I'm guessing somewhere in Qld or NT since you mention the Logan store?

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

Is it just me, or do people from other countries always think Australia is like a tiny island? You're right, if you flip Australia verticly, it's pretty much the same size and shape as the US (minus Alaska & Hawaii).

That's why I said I wasn't sure if it was a viable option or not; it's not like I know where you live and where the Ikeas are located. Good luck with your search, then.

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

What do you mean same size as the US? The US is approximately ...... i think the number is 6 ...... times bigger, but we aren't the tiniest country around!
The detolfs are ikea exclusive, so it would be them or no one i would say, unfortunately

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

Yeah, It'd probably take about 6 days there and back!

Yep, QLD. Cairns to be exact! There has been on-again of-again proposals of an IKEA here; personally I'm for it - if it means I can buy my detolfs!!!!!

I'm not sure that I'd hold my breath waiting for one - Sydney used to have 3 or 4 IKEAs, it now only has one - it seems they're cutting back. I guess your next option would be to look for something similar at one of the other discount furniture stores, like Fantastic Furniture, or Freedom, or similar?

It's always great to see the success of the Australian schools system :lol :monkey3

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

Hey all,

Fellow collector from Australia here, long time board lurker, now inspired to post.

I have also been searching for the Detolfs, but, coming from Tassie makes it extraordinarily difficult. I have found some places locally that design shopfittings that can do cabinets like the Detolf but cost a fortune and are not visible.

I have scoured every furniture shop in southern Tassie to no avail. Indeed, this week I was going to call a mainland Ikea and see if they would take payment over the phone and ship one. Reading the above posts was not fun.

If anyone else has any more thoughts or suggestions, I am sure there would be many happy Aussies in the forum.

Collecting mainly Premium Formats and LSBs, I considered the fish tank option, but are not going to stand a chance of gaining the WAF...

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

I did a fair bit of looking around when I decided to update my display system.
In the end it was hard to beat IKEA and their Besta system, but then I had it easy, I live in Adelaide and went to the local store.
I know the Adelaide store does do delivery, but it wasn't all that cheap and I suspect its limited to SA only.
As for Detolfs equilivants, shop fittings is likely your only other option, which new I suspect really won't be cheap. However, shops go out of business all the time, maybe check local paper for autions of second hand stuff, you could be luckly.

goes to show doesnt it :D

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

The only thing I can suggest is, that you guys in the more remote areas, pick up whatever suits your liking when you are on holidays, and an Ikea happens to be handy. If they wont ship it, buy it, when doing the tourist thing, and arrange the shipping yourself.

Tasmania is discounted something like 50% on the ferry, so slip over to Richmond Ikea on your way back home and grab some stuff. Use the stimulus package. Other than that I have no ideas.

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

Sorry to hijack this thread since I can't help much. But do these fit most PF's? I was in IKEA a few weeks back looking for cabinets and everything was too small.

Has that it only can take 6kg on the shelves. That has me a little concerned.

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

^^^^^^
I wanna ask a similar question:

I pretty much only collect 1:1 busts, how will the detolfs hold up with the weight? I'm talking Arnie bust, Ironman, I doubt the Alien & Wolf Predator Busts would fit in it?

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

1.For PF's you can remove a shelf I've seen several where people have had 2 per Detolf.
2. Since Ikea is not viable, several stores stock the cube style book shelves, Targets and just about every furniture store though not glass may suit your need.
3. Harvey Normans do have some glass cabinets but they start around $1000
4. Look at the King of Darkness thread he has some nice bookshelves almost ladder style which looks kinda cool
5. Maybe see if someone in Brissy can go to Ikea & put them on a Queensland Rail ?

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

Can't help in the Detolf search, but seeing as most of the Aussies on the board have posted in this thread I thought I would too. :D

Re: Detolfs in Aus?

**Now before you mention IKEA, I should tell you that I live nowhere near one of the 3 IKEA's in Aus. I also asked the Logan one if I could order over the phone - they said no......also, there is the whole ordeal of oganising a courier to pick them up from IKEA; ie. IKEA isn't really an option**

Have you tried ordering on line? I believe they do have the ability to have your items picked up and delivered also.

If you still have problems I would try some local department stores and see if they'd be willing to contact you, should they be looking to dump their display cabinets at some point.
