Yeah, the Maria is certainly the one I would go for, but I strongly suspect it will pass my limit on the very first day! :monkey2

I would love the Duel bronze but it will pass my limit in the first hour... all 5 of those are cool as heck though.

I like this version of the Weapon X archive prop. And naturally the bronze DotF is awesome.

Maria is definitely the one to have. I'll be bidding, but she's going to be the light-up Iron Man of this auction and I'm sure it will quickly escalate past my limit. I believe there's a licensing problem with Metropolis, so we aren't likely to see a regular run of Maria ever.

Licensing problems? Don't say that Dave! Just like that other movie I want to see figures from: Blade Runner. Man, and instead, they make me buy Hulks, and Obi-Wans and Gandalfs... :D
If the license thing is true, bummer! Otherwise I hope this Maria will be indeed the light-up IM which got a sort of successor in the SIM. So, I hope SSW will make Marias after the auction.

Actually, I've been thinking about it... isn't Metropolis in the public domain? Every body and their brother has released a VHS or DVD version. Who holds licensing rights if the movie is public domain now?

Actually the license isn't for the movie, but for the Maria design - some German artist controls the rights.

If I could actually write off what I bid as a charitable donation I'd bid in the high heavens because its a worthy cause but since when you receive something back for charitable donations the write off becomes null and void my wallet just won't allow for it.:monkey2

Copyright is a onery beast - it all changed in 78, but I believe that for some properties it's life of the author plus 50 years. Foreign copyright is even more esoteric. And copyrights can be renewed if you add to the property in some way. But I'm pretty sure about the Maria design.

Really? After all this time? We are talking 81 years old now... don't copyrights expire after 75 years (except for Disney)?
Yes, some copyrights expire after a certain time, but as long as there's family or an organization (foundations etc.) that act as verified representative of the author, the legacy remains theirs. And if you want to use it, you have to deal with them. Its pretty complex actually. For instance, there's a world famous 15th century painting hanging in the Saint Bavo Cathedral in the Belgian city of Ghent: "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Hubert and Jan van Eyck. Click here if you want to have a look at it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghent_Altarpiece
I think it is still unclear who the actual owner of the altarpiece is (the Belgian government, the diocese of Ghent, ...) , but as far as I know, there is only one photographer that holds the copyrights to the photo's of the paintings. Since these old paintings are very sensitive to light, only one photographer got the o.k. to make pictures of the paintings, and that's it. They where made for a book about the altarpiece. So, if someone would want to publish a photo of that painting, he has to contact that photographer to negotiate the $, or, ask the diocese for permission to make their own pictures. To get the approval of course would take years.
What I'm saying is that, even though the photographer is not the author of that altarpiece, he officially was authorized to make the pictures, and therefore somehow holds the copyright to the "likeness" of the paintings.
Hmmm.... I think a shorter way of saying all this might be that German artist is the owner of the Maria Robot likeness, and therefore he or his bereaved are the ones that dispose of it. There's always someone that wants to make cash, you know...
Copyrights are a very difficult subject, so don't quote me on this... it's been a while! Now I just have to find out if Dave's story about that German artist is solid! :lol

Since that robot is not technically Maria, there is no expectation that anyone could secure such rights.

Let's face it. The robot was called false Maria or Hel (probably short for the deceased Helen) but it was not actually named Maria in the film! She was an impostor!

:lol
