Did I ask for something unreasonable? Ebay related

Personally, I'd complete the transaction as originally intended - the buyer pays you the total amount in US$ via Paypal, and you ship the item to him, with tracking and insurance. That way, you're both covered and the tracking number will serve as proof of delivery.

I had one local buyer ask to do a pick-up, and I told him that he could either pay me the US$ that he won the item for, or the equivalent in Canadian funds. He chose the latter. There's no way I would have taken CDN$ at par. You'd be losing 5% or so off the total at current exchange rates.
 
to the ebay power sellers ... Does stating an item is "being sold AS-IS" give you any protection from ****** buyers trying to screw you over?
I know it holds up in court for selling other items off ebay.

I always select "seller will not accept returns on this item" on my listings. So, basically, it's buyer beware. Of course, I always ensure that my listing mentions any flaws or issues, with photos.
 
Sounds like things got pretty convoluted there. If I were you, I would simplify things in the future--only allow for Paypal payments in your currency, do not allow local pick-up. If they disagree with either after they win because they can't read, cancel the transaction and get your eBay fees back. You won't run into as many problems that way, and it will save you time and effort.

It doesn't matter if you select that on your listings. If the buyer claims the item is not as described, etc. Ebay/Paypal will side with the buyer and you'll have to accept the return and refund them.
 
I've sold a lot on ebay in the last year or so and I've not had any real problems.

The sold "as is" doesn't guarantee you're safe if you didn't describe it accurately and do all you could to verify your description. We had a cell phone from a friend on there that was sold as is and listed as having no charger, but the buyer found the screen had somewhere along history been cracked and the LCD had leaked, making the phone functioning, but not exactly useable on the screen. I wound up refunding the auction price minus shipping and told him to keep the phone (he was doing testing things at work with various phones).

You have to be meticulous as a seller, document everything, photograph as necessary, and be able to fully support your side of a case if it goes through ebay for settling disputes.

As for this situation, it does sound like there will be potential problems with this guy. Take extensive photographs before sending him the item and continue to be polite and even apologetic for difficulties with the auction to smooth over any unhappiness. It's hard if the other person's being a jerk, but do your best. ;)
 
Yeah, most everything on eBay is sold "as is" one way or the other. So unless you are willing to do updates/repairs to something someone buys if they aren't satisfied (in which case, something would not necessarily be sold "as is"), I don't see the reason to go there with the auction. But the buyer has to know precisely what that means.
 
Expecting to be treated fairly as a seller on ebay I dont think is too much to ask, unfortunatly ebay themselves dont give a damn about sellers its become rediculous what buyers can get away with on there!
 
Im just dipping my toes in Ebay as a seller atm, touch wood so far Ive had no issues, but so far Ive had nothing but straight forward transactions
 
I've been fine with the majority of transactions (500+) but at the same time you will occasionally deal with someone who is a pain. Just part of the price of eBay.
