Do repainted or upgraded figures/statues lose or gain resale value?

I'm always amazed how a repaint can make a mediocre or even decent looking figure or statue look 100 times better. I know for some of us here a figure repainted by Les Walker, or any of the other talented people here, can be seen as an upgrade, but are there collectors here who prefer to own a figure or statue in its original form?

I recently saw a pic of a repainted PF Aragorn and I thought it made it look 100 times better. I've considered having mine repainted as well, but since my interests change every few years, I'm afraid that when the time comes that I want to sell it I may be limiting the amount of people who may want it by having it altered.

What do you folks think?

Eric

I think if it is unique and actually good looking, the genuine fans or collectors will be willing to pay even more for it although the number of people who want to buy it will be smaller. There is a repainted hot toys joker for sale on ebay right now and its at $450 right now (only the head is repainted). I think it looks great but not $450, but apparently some collectors do.

It depends on how good the repaint/weathering is and if it's been down by someone of a pedigree in the Hobby's field... Say a Les Walker repaint or something... IMO.

That's tricky. A really well done repaint should bring a premium. One that is even slightly subpar will bring in less...sometimes much less than normal retail. I would say the less expensive the piece, the greater the gain with a repaint. I just bought a repainted ED209 which had wires added and a nice paint job for less than the retail on an untouched one. All depends. No guaranteed formula.

Yep, all depends on the quality. If its well done then I think buyers respond accordingly...

You bought that? I was going to bid... but last minute decided against it. The customization looked pretty good, but the picture quality made me a little leary.

But sold for a great price :rock

With the original paintjobs there are most of the time already discrepancies: some look better than others and this straight from the box.

I wonder what the value will be for a Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) or Anakin Skywalker featuring a Darren Carnall upgraded headsculpt with a Les Walker paintjob?

And I wonder what a JC Hong repaint might fetch like he did with that Joker

IMO, it depends on quality of the paint job and also the reputation of the painter who did it.

But I also agree it all depends on who's buying it. some people are anal about this stuff and some just want something that "looks good".

I've noticed people on ebay get caught-up on the presentation of a listing more than the actual item itself.

I've been guilty of that a few times , I have to admit.
When I have been making the listing up in photoshop I always get carried away a little ..... or a lot. :monkey3:rotfl

Well hey, it obviously works so stick with it. I've seen some great customs go for way under the market because it's a snapshot of a dude's shelf (mostly mine). :lol
