Do repainted or upgraded figures/statues lose or gain resale value?

I'm of the opinion to keep the pieces as is. It is the product of an artist or company and, warts and all, is to be valued as is. I would no more think to get a repaint on my collectibles than I would any of the original artwork (by unknowns) or my china. Although I've seen some beautiful work done by customizers (many on this board), I still can't get myself to change the originals.

I'm sure I'm in the minority though.

If money wasnt an object Id have alot more work done to my "originals" infact at least half would get repainted

When I first started collecting I thought Hasbro was good

2 and half years on and now only 1 or 2 of Hasbro is Ok, well the sculpts are

If youve been collecting along time you can better discern the difference between mediocre and good well lets say your opinion should be more educated, also depends on the collector, If I was a batman fanatic and could afford it Id have one of those

Plus more often than not your buying a limited run of a piece, SS figures for example, if you have it "professionally" customised and its an improvement, then logic would dictate that this makes it more desirable to others (if they see the improvement), its exclusivity has increased, logically making its value increase

Admitedly SS SW figures dont retain or increase that well so logic sometimes flies out the window

I customise my own but I dont collect to increase their value, I also have customs done / made by some of my favourite customisers from these boards

Id like to think all my customisations done by me and others are improvements on the base figure

Increasing their exclusivity and hopefully their value, but seeing as some if not most collectables go down in value any improvements would at best make them retain their original purchase value

Some may not feel that they are improvements, but Im not collecting for others so it doesnt matter

Art is subjective, and the old adage "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" rings very true for collectables, lets face it some of my friends cant understand me paying £100 for a figure,

A £100 for a plastic doll ?

Well, I dont do "repaints" per say, but I DEFINITELY do "touch-up" work. Like fixing a paint smudge, applying a hint of liquid leaf to metal objects (for a real metallic sheen) and gloss to eyes/mouths. Basically making them look more like thier actual box art... :D

I'm a purist when it comes to this stuff, I see people saying "this will look better once I repaint it" all the time online but to me it's all about original condition. It's weird because I'm an opener so I'm not about keeping things in mint condition or anything (though ideally I would keep my stuff as close to mint as possible after opening) but once you alter it I see that pretty much as the destruction of the figure, even if it is actually an improvement.

I repaint for myself, but 600.00+ seems insane for a slight resculpt and repaint. I've seen some of the better customizer's stuff go on ebay for triple original value or more(usually a Darnell resculpt and paint), and others go for less or just over original retail. It's hit or miss. I've also seen some that advertise the customizer's name. That didn't seem to have any effect, as most of those didn't go for much over retail. It's gotta be an excellent job and gotta be a hot subject. Now's the time for Joker repaints. Horror customs seem soft.
