Do you write music?

Many years ago, I was in a rock band that had some pretty heavy subject matter. I was so into it, that our first "demo" was a full-length concept album. The experience was completely draining as it was so personal, and eventually I couldn't continue performing the songs I wrote. The band broke down partly due to this and mostly due to issues from living together.

I got back into writing music about a year ago after a hiatus of about 6 years. The music I'm writing is quite different from the gothic industrial type of stuff I wrote back in the day. I nearly have a whole album completed in my head, I just don't have enough time and energy to figure out all of the notation fast enough. I basically just use a synthesizer and Cubase. I can't play guitar too well, but I know music theory pretty well.

So, I wonder who else here has tried or is trying to write a song? What inspires you? What are your tools of the trade?

I've been composing music since 2007, but have only recently gotten together with a like-minded friend to try putting out songs with actual lyrics. I'm primarily into electronic music, but not the club, dub, or cyber-goth stuff you see on YouTube all the time. It's more conceptual and semi-cinematic (although still structured like a normal song). The idea is to make it hard-hitting, but in a passionate and [hopefully] beautiful way.

I use MixCraft 5 along with some free VSTi's I've gathered off the web over the years (plus occasional live piano and guitar). BeatCraft comes in handy for drum sequencing and I can add found sounds into that program as well.

Blade, that sounds really cool. Hopefully you and your friend can come up with some really unique sounds together. I haven't collaborated in a long time and I'm kind of envious.

Ecko, my intentions were to learn how others are inspired and what tools they use to compose.

Ween, do you have any plans for your lyrics? Maybe you can get together with someone who can help put them to music.

I write music - wrote my first few instrumental songs (Hard Rock/Metal) about 7-8 years ago as a teenager. Those didn't go anywhere as I never did get the time to have a vocalist complete them.

Recently though I left my job and have taken a year out to pursue my extracurricular interests one of which is writing an album with my cousin. We have very similar tastes. It's shaping up to be almost like a concept album, concerning some issues that are very important to us both.

So far we've completed demos for about 3 songs, and are writing another 3-4 songs. Will be recording the album in a month's time when I visit my cousin (He lives in the US).

Very excited for it!
The genre is basically a blend of grunge and progressive rock.

Can't wait to finish recording and put it out there. I don't expect to make any money from this, it's just something I needed to do. Artistic release I guess.

Not lately but I used to mess around with a programme called "reason" and had some airplay on xfm dublin.

Always loved to create music whether it be mixing records or back in the day tape looping on twin casette decks
My stuff is electronic but love soul, funk, rock,jazz and anything in between as long as it is worthy.

Yeah kids or in my case kid, take alot of your time and energy.
Not complaining would'nt change a thing.

Inspiration is a funny thing though going back to the first post.

Things that inspired me were hearing somebody elses music and trying to emulate it but with my own slant.
Or hearing a sample and building a track around it.
Sometimes you have to be in the right mood to want to create and forcing it does not work.
Films were and still a big influence on me and recreating sounds or moods and sometimes using samples from certain films made some of the best results for me anyway.

I've been in a couple bands. my first band called "Conniving Cadavers" recorded 2 albums and we have been playing for years but we stopped writing new stuff and are only playing a couple times a year now. my other band was really fun but our drummer traveled Asia and Australia for a year and that fell apart.

For me this is true 100% of the time. There is a very specific mood I need to be in to be able to write.

How does JamSession work? My writing partner and I have been trying to use Skype from time to time but most of the time there's a bit of a lag which kills it.

Regarding lyrics, i'm the same way - love metaphors and deeper meanings.

The main thing for online jamming is doing it through a desktop/laptop computer and thru ethernet. Otherwise it's almost impossible to get a decent connection.

I have no idea. When I said I couldn't write music, I meant literally write down the notes.

Making money on it is pretty low on my list of concerns as well. It's really a series of challenges to me; can I write a song with proper chords and vocal harmonies was the first challenge that got me started again. Also, I have the desire to not leave things as they were the last time around where they just fizzled out and don't paint a true picture of the person I am today.

It's great that you are doing a concept album. It really is fun and challenging to piece it together. I'm already finding groups of songs of mine that fit well together and tell a complete story, but I'm not sure if I'm going to make a complete concept album this time around.
