I agree whole-heartedly! That would be amazing. To see our favorite Time Lord carrying the burden of having to commit genocide f his whole race including Romana, Leela(maybe), and everything he knew of his home. Played out by John Hurt. Brilliant!

I'm not so sure John Hurt's Time Lord (what do we call this character? The Doctor specifically says he's not The Doctor, but the credits say he is) is the one who ended the Time War. Unless I'm mistaken, The Doctor has always described what he did in the Time War as necessary. I think 9 and 10 both defended his actions. John Hurt's Time Lord is described by 11 as somebody who did something terrible.

Maybe I'm just over(or under?)-thinking things though.

I think the popular names I have seen are "Forgotten Doctor" and "Hurt Doctor". I am good with that. Shuffling their numbers around will be tedious at best. :lol

I like the "Hurt Doctor" as it sounds a bit poetic given his possible status as "damaged goods."

I think my favorite thing about the mystery Doctor is the fact that it is John Hurt playing him! He is a brilliant actor and it certainly is a massive win for Doctor Who to have some one like him on board and in the title role.

and 30 seconds after 11 says he is him but not a "Doctor" we get this:

whatever teh answer, i'm looking forward to it.

Shame they didn't involve Mcgaan... though they might have, as well as other living doctors, and simply not commented on it yet.

If we can keep " Trevor" a suprise in iron man, suprise casting in Doctor who might happen as well.

Personal theory on this, so dont scream and shout ok?...

I hope Hurt is the 8th Doctor. We do not know how long the Time War went on for in reality, his utilitarian appearance and the melding of 8th and 9th clothing styles could lend to the idea of him being the 8th at the end of the war. If they have got McGann reprising for flashbacks/interactions with the other Doctors (whoever they may be...) It would be nice to see the man before and after that universe shattering decision.

If this is the case I will be glad because if they are setting the Doctor up to do something truly DARK later in his existence it could risk completely alienating the character to the audience and risk the fans loosing one of the two good series the BBC is currently keeping in production.

The second, of course, being Sherlock!

And if they bring Benedict in as a villain in DW at a later date, my wife may love the show even more than she does now...

Of course, this could also all be Moffat doing a Abrams style "Mystery Box" misdirection..in which case there is a special level of hell ready for him....

With blackjack....

Actually...forget the blackjack...

I'll have the spiked bats ready instead....

Doc

Hurt apparently broke the promise of the title, "The Doctor", so he may not have that mantle. That would technically still make 11 Doctors and 1 Gallifreyan dude.

This is what I'm thinking will happen, no matter what that caption said. :) Or, I guess the Hurt Doctor could come to terms with what he did and be welcomed into the official fold or some such by the end of the special.

All this speculation on who John Hurt as The Doctor is....

About 2 years ago there was a plan to have William Hartnell's 1st Doctor appear in a 2 Doctors episode, as Hartnell and Richard Hurndall had since passed away Philip Madoc was rumoured to have been chosen to play the 1st Doctor. Madoc sadly passed away before any official confirmation. There can be no chance that Hurt is playing Hartnall's Doctor, or any of the other TV incarnations for that matter, which is a massive shame.

Whether or not Hurt is "The Doctor" in name he still represents a regeneration. If Hurt is the "real 9" he's bumping the other Doctors and that means they will need to deal with the 12 regeneration rule that much sooner.

My feeling is he's the Valeyard -or- they will undo the evil Doctor just as quickly as they introduced him, rewriting him out of existence.

My guess is if anyone running the show really gave a rats tail about the 12 regeneration limit thing you'd be hearing about it in almost every episode. I think fanboys need to prepare themselves for the probably that they completely ignore it or make a very simple explanation.

I hope not. Not because I think there should be a cap or I think there's a need to strictly follow the rules of the past... but because it could be fodder for some good stories.

Yeah, but that would expose them to a tremendous amount of "the explanation wasn't good enough!"

Certain fanboys like that Bcm guy would rather see the series end than to see an episode from 1976 be contradicted.

To be honest, I'd rather have them completely ignore it and have the 13th Doctor's run be free and clear of such a heavy storytelling burden if in the end it was a lame deux ex machina that changes the rule.

Its easier to ignore the edict than to play along like its real and then last minute go "never mind."
