Does buying Medicom figures make sense?

Thanks for all the great remarks. So far all of my 1/6 figures are from Hot Toys. I have one custom Selene from Underworld, where being a female and little smaller is not such a bad thing. Scale would be an issue for me as i'd prefer my other male figures to not look like "teenage boys" next to the HT figures.

Now is the "small" size issue consistent across all Medicom figures or is it more hit an miss? For example i've read that the Medicom TDK Batman is good but the Begins Batman is a smurf.

Its pretty much across the board... there are a few where that's not the case (some of the animated figures and the Clone Troopers) but in general the scale is smaller and they are more stylized.

But for some of their licenses, the smaller scale fit right in. This goes to their Japanese licenses like Kamen Rider, etc.

which medicom figure are you interested in? Its kinda hard to answer the "small" size question since a lot of their products are correct in scale to the real life subject and the anime/manga based figures are really not that important when in comes to scale.

I have the follwing Medicom figures: Vader ROTJ, Vader ROTs, Stormtrooper, Blackhole Stormtrooper, Sandtrooper, TIE Fighter Pilot, Royal Guard and Ghost in the Shell Motoko Kusanagi and I'm really happy with them. To be honest I like the Medicom Vader and Stormtrooper more than the Sideshow version. I don't really care about their size since I have them displayed separately. Some of the Medicom figures might have problems with broken joints but I was lucky. On the other hand SS figures (at least my Stormtroopers) have floppy joints. I also have Terminator, Predator and Appleseed figures from Hot Toys. The difference is there nevertheless...

I only have the Medi Alien & Kaneda, both are excellent figs imo.

The Alien is 12 inch, tiny compared to the HT offering & the paint is almost non-existent... But I like it so much more.

Kaneda just rocks, the body holds any pose I could possibly want & he seems pretty sturdy to me. Can't wait 'till Tetsuo turns up - that's where Medi shines, Anime figs.

I had that Kaneda for awhile, and the quality (or lack thereof) of that jacket worried me. It felt so cheap, I feared that it would start flaking and coming apart shortly. And the little sticker/decal-type thing on the back of the jacket looked so cheap. I'm sure that Hot Toys would have gone another, higher quality route.

Yea, in all likelihood - let me know when they make a Kaneda & Tetsuo & I'll be all over it. :pfft:

HT are better, quality & price - I think Licences are Medi's main draw card.

I have several Medi Star Wars and Marvel Comic figures. The truth is the truth with the limited lot I own. They are not in scale, break easily (Marvel), anime appearance and IMO way overpriced.

That said, Medi Anakin, Maul and both versions of Spiderman are some of the coolest figures I own or owned. It is really a crapshoot what you can live with and what you cannot live with in a figure whether they are worth your investment.

After all this, I am going to sale all my Medi figures (except Anakin) for sale. They just don't have a place in my collection anymore.

as far as I know the medi TDK batman is in scale with the HT's batman line and seems to match the HT in quality as well. but doesn't come with as many accessories. Then again, he is cheaper.

I've got the Medi Bruce Wayne and he fits in scale wise. I think he might even be slightly taller then the standard TT I have Dent on. His face paint is the only thing ruining that figure though :slap

HT version 1 seems off to me, so that's a pass and I really can't justify spending $220 plus on the DX. Hoping that medicom would be a good middle ground?

well, if you are patient, you should be able to find a HT DX for far less than $220. But if you really need to have a 1/6 TDK figure, the medicom is a good middle ground. And if I might add, following many examples in the DC board, you can make the medi TDK even better.

note, if you do decide to stick with HT, make sure its a later batch DX. Don't get sucked in by the cheaper price. There are too many problems with the initial batch you should just avoid them entirely.

i have seen better paint jobs on a rusted car than what Medicom can do. My Peter Parker looks like its painted by a blind person

Not just paint accuracy, either, but the color choices are sometimes bizarre, and there is little subtlety/nuance. As others have said, that may work if you want a cartoon character that was designed to be a single color, but it doesn't work for real people.

The paint work on every Medicom figure I've owned has been very neat and clean. But the issue I have is its usually too neat and clean with the end product being very simplified looking.

However, I did have one issue where the hair color on the Jedi Luke seemed to leak this odd green goo every few months. It wasn't a huge deal as it wiped off cleanly, but it was very odd. I guess there was some kind of chemical reaction between the paint and plastic :dunno
