I've recently been buying a number of new sealed DVD movies on Ebay and Amazon Marketplace that are very cheap, but noticed when I receive them the case feels soft and the insert appears warped. they still have the security sticker and inside the DVD is fine and plays well. are these overstock DVDs and what makes these different from the ones that can be bought at Best Buy, Target and other retail stores? thanks.

If these are older DVDs, it could just be that they are bare bones DVDs, second or third releases and the companies are just making the packaging cheaper. They go all out for the initial release of a movie, then bare bones it when they release or re-issue the DVD. It's like buying a paperback book compared to a first issue hardcover.

I hope that makes sense and I'm just guessing. :D

thanks, some of the DVDs are fairly recent from 2008/2009 so I'm not sure if they've been reissued already. have any of you purchased movies from Amazon Marketplace for like $3 snipped, because it's those I'm noticing the softer cases are occuring in.

If you're getting DVDs that are a year old for $3, I have to wonder about them too. They could be knock-offs.

Funny. I feel ripped off when I buy a DVD and there isn't any inner papers/table of contents or cards/coupons.

So do I! I open the box and there's nothing but the DVD or Blu. I want more!! Maybe that's why I want a slipcover on it because it's at least something!!

Yup...I will always pick the disc that has a special cover/box over the generic version... if I have a choice. I just bought "Across the Universe" at bestbuy last week cause it was on sale for $8 and I heard it was a good movie, which it was. Two choices: 1 copy of older version with slip cover AND higher stick price (Originally $29.99) and a bunch of copies with no slip cover and a price of something like $14.99. you can guess which one I opted for.

A lot of these discs are just overstock or poor sellers and the companies have slashed the prices to move them out quick... it cost money to warehouse stuff. This happens a lot to anime series when one volume of a series sells out (usually because of a much lower production run) and buyers are left only able to purchase part of the series. I've picked up single volumes for as little as $.01 plus shipping and they were legitimate issue DVDs. Over the last year or so, I've picked up dozens of series singles for around $3 to $5 each, and then track down the one or two sold out volumes on eBay, Amazon or elsewhere. I might have to pay full retail (or sometimes more) for the sold out volume(s) but in the end, the total cost of the series was a fraction of the original MSRP.
