Was that really a choice that you made? If you wanted to play those games, you had to go through Origin no? Since most of my games go through Steam, I'd prefer if all of them did, so I wouldn't have to use multiple services. I only used Origin because I wanted to play Crysis 3. I suppose I could have chosen to not play Crysis 3, but I think that's what most people say when they're "forced" to use their service.

While it won't affect me much right away, I have a problem with it yeah. My issue is mostly later on when the next Xbox comes out. I assume that once the system is dead, the online servers will shut down and now your Xbox 720 is a paper weight. Other than that, it'll have the same problems that other "always on" set ups have. I see it as only a negative. I can't think of a single positive thing the gamer gets out of this.

How could Steam get so successful? Pure force of course. No one had a choice like you normally should have in capitalism, you was forced to use it, if you wanted to play what you bought. Of course Steam is the same **** but one dog turd is more than enough, no one asked for Origin and Uplay and where should all this end? The government should forbid such forced software installations or connections to the internet. If I buy something, I should be able to own it and use it. I may need electricity to run a computer or console but I don't need internet and therefore no registration of some kind..

EA is basicaly stating that becuasue they're sucsessful financialy, they're not the worst company.

That's completely missing the point.

It's how they treat their customers, and their IP, as well as catering to the least common denominator that makes them a lousy company.


Michael bay made billions with his transformers movies... .and they're still steaming piles of p00p.
Bank of america made billions, while nearly destroying the american economy.
My point being, being a financial sucsess dosn't make you a good company.

Me too! I don't buy any EA games. Except for Crysis. And Battlefield. And Dead Space. And Dragon Age. That's it though. That's all the money they'll get from me. And Mass Effect.

just because you are into all of those games doesnt mean that they appeal to me. i like their racing games. i wait until the are used to buy them. by purchasing it at all i am supporting the product. they make people buy these online passes because they choose to put the "DLC" in the fresh copy. i think its a kick in the arse to the fans to do that. its insane. this is the only reason i put meh to your original comment. ive watched all of the above mentioned games because my friends like them but i only like to watch them. so i have seen them. i wouldnt have bought them regardless.

They do the pass thing to discourage buying used and making sure they make a little coin from those who do. It makes perfect business sense. I get that it bothers some, but I can't say I blame them. Publishers lose a ton of money to used games. At least it's optional. If you buy used, you do so understanding that if you want to play it online, you'll have to buy a pass.

Not sure I follow, but ok. Just curious, but what would happen if they released something else you really like? You've made an exception for Mirrors Edge already. It sounds like your self imposed ban of EA is only holding out as long as they don't have something you want.

I've been annoyed by EA plenty of times in the past, but I've accepted that as a gamer, I will cave in and buy games I want. Can't help it. I don't care THAT much, to punish myself by missing out on awesome games on a principle I don't fully believe in. If you have a principle, more power to you, but the moment you say "except for this game" it's not really a principle anymore.

my principle lies only in what i am interested in. i like their racing games those are what i play. but i dont care enough about their racing franchise to pay for the game at full price. so i wait for a bargain to play it. when you buy the online pass its not so much a bargain anymore (seeing thats all i play and could care less about the actual game), so its better off just not to buy it. its just not that important to me. ME ive played through more times that i can remember and im looking forward to a sequel. thats a game id pay for at full price from them.

Sorry, but the videogame industry was doing perfectly fine before charging for online passes--see the Call of Duty series, you know, the highest grossing entertainment release of all time in any medium.

It's a stretch to call them America's worst company, but it is a fact that they are by an enormous margin, America's greasiest videogame company.

I mention Call of Duty only to demonstrate that video games in general are more profitable than ever, because gaming has become more acceptable and further-reaching in recent years demographically speaking, no longer being a past time for "nerds", with budgets and ad campaigns rivalling the biggest Hollywood block-busters. The industry is in no way hurting; it is booming. Money "lost" to used sales is a drop in the bucket compared to money generated from new sales. If you're at all sketical: EA Revenue: 2013 ^ $4.1 Billion (with a B).

To which you might say, "But what about the little guys?" Yes, video game devs close down shop everyday, including small independent teams, but this is not a new phenomenon-- It's been happening since the inception of Pong. In fact, with programs like Steam Greenlight, Kickstarter, etc... there has never been a better time to start a video game company.

As for other companies "doing it if they could", no. That would be suicide. EA consumers only agree to EA contracts because it is the only way to play games from companies like Bioware, Criterion, Crytek, etc... We've become apathetic and submissive when there is no other way to play the games we love. EA couldn't give less of a **** about their consumer base. "Who cares if they aren't happy with our awful DRM service, or our constant barrage of DLC, or our horribly rushed games, or our servers that are always a mess? They're throwing their money at us!"

Why doesn't Valve enact an online pass? Because they respect their consumer base. They give me great games for 49.99, support these games with FREE DLC because they feel they have given the consumer a game worth supporting. They treat us well, which makes me want to support them to make other great games and services. If I were to buy an EA game ( I won't be anymore, btw), it would be because that is the "price of admission." With Valve, I feel like I'm truly supporting artists who care about their product, and who will use the money to further their art.

I never said there was anything wrong with the industry. That's a different subject anyway. If a company is doing well, they should be cool with losing money on certain things? They're making enough, so no biggie? No company is like that nor should they be.

With Valve the only way to play their games is piracy or Steam. There's no legal way to play their games unless you buy them "new" physical copy or download. At the moment, they don't have the same problem that companies like EA are dealing with on the used market. Steam was their answer to used games and piracy. If they were facing the same problem console publishers are having, who knows what they would do. Maybe nothing. Maybe passes.
