I've got an auction ending tonight and I received an email from the high bidder saying they had a death in the family and can't participate in the auction any more. If I cancel their bid, does it act like they never bidded (i.e. remove all their bids) or will it go down to the next highest bid? I worry about this because out of the 40 bids on this auction, 36 belong to this bidder. Any ideas how cancelling works? Or if I should even do it?

Heres my take on this. If someone in my family died the last thought on my mind would be a ebay auction. Get what i'm saying. I probably wont cancel it, but thats just me.

I wouldnt cancel his bids if he bid THAT much in your auction. sounds like he was trying to inflate YOUR price to make his sell higher.

But yes, i believe if you cancel one of his bids, all of them will be canceled therefore dropping the price down to the next persons highest bid.

what's his ebay id so i can block him or link us to your auction.

I don't believe that he is telling the truth. That being said, having a family die is nothing to joke about. I know this. :monkey2 I would honor his request just in case and never deal with him again. You can't be to sure.

i was under the impression too that you can only cancel bids before the 12 hour mark. or was that limitation only for the buyer and not the seller?

I think buyers are limited to 12 hours, but sellers can do it whenever. The next highest bid is only a dollar less. If I cancel this person's bids, does that mean it goes to that person? eBay never fully explains anything on their site.

It's been awhile since Ive canceled a bid, but if i remember correctly the cancel bid page tells you that it will drop out all of that person's bids. or something like that. try going as far as not confirming the cancel and read what the page says?

personally, i would cancel... i believe the bidding will revert to the next one in line for your item. one cannot get blood from a stone... there is no point having him win your auction only not to pay.

I agree. Either way I don't think he will pay.

at least you cover yourself as a seller. You don't risk getting lowballed on your item, and after 7 days of auction end you can file a non-paying bidder claim that will get you your listing fees and final value fees back, then simply relist your item again. This is why i would not cancel.

What happens though if the other bidder doesn't want to pay? At least if he cancels this guys bid he will get money from someone.

OK, I cancelled the bids and it dropped a dollar to the next highest bidder. Whew.

Thanks for all your input, guys!

if any bidder doesnt want to pay, you wait 7 days then file a non-paying bidder claim. ebay then contacts the bidder, and if they still do not pay within another 7 days, you win the claim. you get all your fees back plus the bidder gets a mark on their account.

That could be a good or a bad thing I guess. Surely a tough call.
