I tend to prefer to watch a woman's body over a muscled guy's body, so I was excited about this new line.. but those pics blow..
We're in 2012 & that hardly looks better than a CY Girl from 10 years ago.
Plus I'd prefer to see a cute japanese lolita over a Hongkongese star. They're already dolls, all there is to do is a good headsculpt (& a good wig).

That looks really nice wow.

With how they look they might as well be 1/6 figures

Yes that was my point. They dress up like dolls, so it would be easier to make dolls from those lolitas. Well it could only be better than some random HK actress in generic nurse outfit.
(the girl is a singer btw, Nana Kitade as it's written on).

I actually have some Pullip's in my collection, they're pretty nice, but nothing realistic of course. The outfits are generally quality, the accessories generally crap. I don't know if a realistic version would end up looking nice, but no one has tried yet.

Those dolls also have nice hair, something that Hot Toys/EB still can't do properly. Of they have much bigger heads, but maybe a 1/4 scale girl model could get good-looking hair.

I don't really see normal guys in here collecting those. I'm guessing you're female?

That's not a *** at you. I'm actually curious.

I've actually held an interest in some of the high end dolls made by Volks, but the issue I have is simply that they tend to be insanely expensive, far more so than your typical 1/6 scale figures.

Also from what I understand the target audience of stuff like that is actually often male, but the general populace seems to think it is female. The same can be said for a lot of those anime and manga series where the whole cast is females and it is usually just slice of life or comedies. Those are actually targeting older males believe it or not. It just so happens the group that enjoys them most usually end up being young females.

After googling images of "Volks Dolls", I'm not sure what to say :lol

Each, to their own collectable interests, I guess :D

I think theirs is a part of us as men want to not be apart of the girlie figures but i think it something we are missing in all of are collections.Look at dollfie's and think about the endless dio's and atmosphere the figures can bring.
Remember the clothes are being made by 18yr + women that may not have the same taste as a guy as well.Ghost in the machine , queens blade , clothing and armor need to be made to understand there role.

Ball-jointed dolls, such as the ones made by Volks, do have a predominantly female fanbase. However, men do collect them. And even some straight ones at that. :) They were orginally designed to be a hybrid between dolls and action figures (hence the Volks name of dollfies. Doll-figures). However, they tended to look stylised and dolly, putting off many male collectors. The current trend, however, is away from the traditional, anime-styled look (like that Lolita-dressed woman over the page) and towards a more realistic aesthetic. They are now becoming very large, resin, strung action figures, which is attracting a new audience. Yes, they are horrendously expensive, but they are even more customisable than action figures (they are often bought blank, for the owner to paint and give eyes and wig to). And the scale of them (many are 1/3 scale) is pretty damned impressive.

If you Google Iplehouse, you will see some of the new generation of realistic BJDs. Knocks spots of Volks, imo.

Actually, thinking on this, I am going to add a rider. Arguably the most popular ball-jointed dolls amongst straight men are Dollfie Dreams, which are (ironically?) the most stylised. They are 1/3 scale vinyl dolls/figures based on the anime aesthetic. There is a definite sexual aspect in the body shapes and outfits available for them. You can even buy a "Peach Pai" addition, which is squidgy silicone breasts that can be fitted to the torso. In Japan, they tend to be the domain of middle-aged men. In the UK, they are bought by males and females of all ages but, perhaps because of the sexual aspects, are particularly popular amongst men.

This is the type of background against which "girlfriend" figures are appearing. It doesn't seem strange to brand them that way if you are aware of how Japanese figures and resin garage kits are marketed.

I have enough ***** not to mind liking girl stuff :)

I like nice statues, figures or dolls, there are some very cool Pullips.

But it's funny you mention that because I find it weird that males like to collect statues of muscled males. I don't have much males in my collection, mostly females because well, they're nicer to look at. But I'm a 37 european, we were raised more with anime than US comics here, which probably explains it.

When I got my first figure of a girl in a sexy pose I remember was nearly hiding it. Now I like to expose soft-**** statues. You quickly get over it (also there's much less problem with nudity in europe, people see nipples all day on TV & don't mind).

Btw Lawrence is a female name here :)

Totally. Not that I can't afford a Dollfie, but I'll never buy because it's just not worth the price. And it's generally not even counting the makeup & wigs, which would cost an arm & a leg to get of this quality:

There are 3 to $5000 Dollfies on ebay and they don't look nearly as good as this.

Pullips however aren't too expensive. They're even cheap compared to today's Hot Toys.

OH, HELL . . .

It's OK to collect female figures.

Whether you want to spend $1.00 to $1,000.00 or more.

It's your $. You earned it & worked for it (generally speaking). It's yours to spend or not to spend whether your hetero, ****, or whatever.

Get over it.

:lol

I think the doll crowd will eat these up, they are used to paying horrendous prices for their fashion dolls.

Ummm........... Nohohohoho-HO! Nono, we will NOT pay horrendous prices for these.

These are not good action figures, nor are they pretty enough to please the fashion doll crowd. We fashion doll people tend to only pay "horrendous prices" for RESIN dolls. [Those tend to be $500 and up.] Or repaints. A Noel Cruz repaint will set you back hundreds of dollars.

I have been involved in the doll hobby for over ten years and these figures ain't it. Im actually not sure what demographic they are intended to appeal to.

It's a matter of priorities. I buy BJDs and get my money's worth out of them in terms of enjoying painting them, photographing them and having them sitting about the house to look at. I don't like Pullips, so that would be a waste of money for me, no matter how cheap they are. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
