Have to say all the excitement and craziness for these TMP figures kinda baffles me a bit. I'm happy enough with mine and they're fairly well-executed... but they're still figures from the rather drab and dull TMP and as a result don't really stand out much in the collection. And if I ever have the need to sell things off they'd be among the first to go.

Do you mean the outfits, movie or both? For me it seems a combination of;
  • the uniqueness of both Kirk and Spock from that movie,
  • the unlikelihood they got made in the first place,
  • the fact that the new cut of TMP shows it to be a far better film than most give it credit for, and
  • the assurances of Nanjin these would be here and gone very quickly & forever.

I guess the only issue I’d have with switching out Kolinar Spock and Disco Bones for the standard uniform versions is that then we’d also need a standard Enterprise issue uniformed Kirk….which I’m also not opposed to, but I think the Kirk uniform we got is my favorite TMP Kirk look. So is Nanjin was limited (or limited himself) to one TMP release for the big three, I’m personally content with the “Return” version because this was quite an event in Trek lore. I was there in 1979 and remember it well.

Its like we're being herded into multiple micro periods of extreme scarcity of the products to focus us all on intense ordering windows to make sure every last unit that happens to be on hand at a given moment is sold as instantly as possible.

The truth could actually be that EXO can make as many of any figure they like at any time, but everything must sell out in order to meet margin requirements. If this is true, I guess their marketing approach is as Ingenius as it might be disingenuous....

I also think there’s a bit of the “woe is me, Star Trek is a brand that just doesn’t sell well” card played as an excuse to sell things “limited”.

Do I think Star Trek has the same fanbase as Star Wars or Marvel? Of course not, but it’s still a fairly large fanbase that’s as dedicated as other fandoms are.

Not sure how old you are, DJ, but I saw TMP in the theater (at Mann’s Chinese, no less) during premier week when I was a kid, and I shared the exact same feelings as you do about the film from the theatrical version. It was great to see the original cast return, but other than that, kinda dull, kinda boring.

But the main complaint was that the focus was on the special effects and slow pacing, almost like the movie was trying to channel 2001: A Space Odyssey instead of Star Trek. But then, in 1983, the Special Longer Version was released which added more than twelve minutes of pure dialog and character interaction which transformed the movie for me. So much so that it’s a toss up for me between TMP and TWOK for my favorite Trek film, and (as you know) that’s saying something! Trek has always been about that ensemble cast working together with the space setting certainly important, but ultimately secondary.

I believe the newer versions of TMP all include this additional footage, so you’re almost for sure basing your opinion on the strongest version of the film, but for me it might be an emotional response to the restoration of the film with the added character interaction having suffered through the almost unwatchable theatrical version. So that jolt elvevated the movie for me that much more. In the current version on the film, Spock’s journey was incredible!

All this to say tha it’s possible that all of us old timers probably hold TMP a bit higher in our rankings because of how the film was transformed. So those TMP releases aren’t going ANYWHERE away from my collection EVER!

Well I'm 49 so not quite old enough to have seen the film in theaters, but I do have a huge love for the TOS era. And while I've come to appreciate TMP a lot more with the remastered version, there's still not much of a story there and not a whole lot of great character moments to chew on. And apart from the Enterprise herself it's not a very visually exciting movie to look at.

But I do get the argument that these are some unique looks for the characters and something we'll never see made again.

My parents would not take me to see TMP at the cinema so I had to wait 3 years for it to come on TV. During those 3 years I bought a ton of the memorabilia and it really fired up my imagination. When I eventually saw the Special Longer Version, it was nothing like I expected, but I still loved it. The Enterprise never felt so real before or since. The problem is, I have never been able to shake the desire for a full action figure crew, and I must have them! Hence all the customs.

I had always wanted to make a version of the movie that used the improved pacing of the Director's Edition plus the the additional character scenes from the SLV. My lockdown project 3 years ago was to finally create this hybrid version of the movie, and then I had to re-do it again, improved to HD, when the most recent versions came out. I also had to learn how to rotoscope in order to make Kirk's spacesuit match in most of the scenes as well.

When the latest boxed set came out, I added in the new outtake scenes with the zapped security guard and Ilia in engineering, but I also always regretted that Janice Rand only got a cameo at the start of the movie. I thought it might be nice to give her an additional cameo in the second half and fell down the rabbit hole. When I eventually decided to have a go at re-incorporating the available parts of the Airlock scene, it became apparent that it would be dull and slow without some further dialogue. Inspired by the landing party of Dallas, Cain, and Lambert from Alien, I decided to place Rand inside Spock's original spacesuit to see what I could do. Using a mixture of Reallusion Character Creator and Iclone, Wav2Lip, Deepfake, Spleeter, Deepvoice, Gimp, Adobe After Effects, and snippets of dialogue from Star Trek episodes, movies, and other shows (such as the Outer Limits, the Rifleman, Death Valley Tales, and the Wonderful World of Disney), I have tried to stitch together a coherent narrative for the Airolock and and Memory Wall sequences using what little footage was available. So now Spock goes inside V'Ger, and then Kirk and Rand follow him. I have effectively made my own fan edit: Star Trek - the Motion Picture: the Rand Cut.

It's pretty rough but it's nice to have the character scenes back, plus the scene with Scotty and Ilia in Engineering, plus giving Rand enough extra dialogue that she ended up being about as prominent as Chekov. It's still the same slow-paced movie. It will never match the drama of TWoK. Still, it holds a special place in my heart and that TMP crew will be completed before I die!

— Some random thoughts and some considerations.
Im a senior citizen.
I would be curious to learn from Nanjin and/or some of the other analysts the demographic of the purchasers of each of these lines.
So is there a median age for those swept into the “7 of 9” buying frenzy vs. a median age for those swept up into the TMP figure frenzy ?
Next, although we are repeatedly told that these are “Limited Editions” we are never privy to what exactly that means. Scores ? Hundreds ? Thousands ? Tens of thousands ?
So … that creates that frenzy of people waking up, sitting at the computer, finger on the button at the ready.
We have seen the utter confusion that has resulted in very reputable and reliable retailers having to cancel, refund, explain, investigate in utter confusion over the TMP figs. 🤦‍♂️
… AND then … a cache is suddenly found on the shelf and hence the opportunity to create another frenzy a week after a “friend” had offered a couple of Kirks on eBay.
Anyone know how many were found and offered before selling out ?
How many were actually sold the other day ? Three ? Thirty ? One hundred ?
NEXT — While I believe the “Monster Maroons” are the more iconic and desirable of the movie uniforms … I’m not sure everyone is entirely CONFIDENT that they will ever be made. I certainly am not.
So … this is the FIRST ( and thus far only) Kirk that EXO-6 has produced —- SO… you take what you can get when you can get it.
AS to the aesthetics or the desire for this particular movie. I know Ive mentioned this before. As a senior citizen, I watched TOS on first run on NBC Thursdays and then Friday for the final season. The early days of color tv with NBC as the innovator in color productions.
When the show was cancelled it had a VERY vocal cult following. It went to nightly early evening and late evening syndication and conventions etc. So the cry went out for MORE and MORE. And the cult grew and grew. And we were teased and rumored about a new tv series (w/o Nimoy) for TEN (10) years. And then came Star Wars which jump started the return of Trek ( as well as other Sci Fi)
So… it was a BIG DEAL , and this image in this uniform was the first we saw of Kirk after ten (10) years . … and… after the initial reintroductions of the cast ….yeah… it wasn’t the best movie. But as I said before… you take what you can get , when you can get it. Perhaps as many have seen in the past few years, bad Trek is better than no Trek at all.

Great insight, and great questions that probably cannot/will not be answered. Although, I would disagree with the notion TMP is "bad Trek." I'm continuously surprised as the grief TMP still gets. 🖖

Yeah GB, —- I might sound harsh to call it “bad” . It just isn’t quite the best . I was really making reference that you take what you can get. I was really thinking of more recent stuff . And even that stuff has some good aspects to it. I’m also a ( senior citizen) fan of Westerns. —- Not much— so you take what you can get . A bad Western is better than no Western at all.

I'm enjoying SNW.

I don't think we're getting anything TMP after Disco Bones. Seems every week there's some new and odd news coming. The mood seems to have shifted regarding EXO-6 from the beginning. I never know what to expect.
