Edit: Last night the news outlets were reporting a meltdown. This morning it looks like that may not be the case. Still a very serious situation. There is discussion of using sea water to cool the reactor.

"Officials say the container housing the reactor was not damaged and radiation levels have now fallen. Tens of thousands of people in the surrounding area have been urged to evacuate" -- BBC

Some actual experts share their thoughts in this article:

I hope Japan dodges the bullet on this one.

End of the world......coming soon :lecture

Re: Nuclear meltdown at Japanese plant

That's got to be a massive radioactive cloud.

Re: Nuclear meltdown at Japanese plant

As of this post, a meltdown has not officially been confirmed by any authority (the prime minister or any supervisor from the Daiichi plant), so news outlets are jumping the gun. That doesn't ruleout the possibility that the explosion that just happened is linkEd to the containment walls, but that hasn't been confirmed yet either.

Yup. A explosion and cloud coming from a nuclear plant in a place that was hit with a couple 8.8 quakes adn tsunami is nothing to worry about.

Of course it's something to worry about. An giant explosion at any industrial plant is something to worry about. I'm just saying that it's a bit early to start blowing things out of proportion, is all.

All I know is that the footage of the tsunami I saw Thursday night didn't seem as bad as it did when I saw it Friday morning, and everytime I see that explosion, it seems worse than it did the first time I saw it.

Agreed. Basically, they need to start moving people further and further away from these plants. That should be priority number one. Unfortunately, it's an earthquake/tsunami disaster zone with all the complications on evacuations that entails.

Re: Nuclear meltdown at Japanese plant

Reports suggest that the roof got blown off the reactor and the reactor walls have crumbled. Not good.

Re: Nuclear meltdown at Japanese plant

Meltdown? All I have seen is a explosion at the building that houses the reactor but not the metal housing the reactor.

Yeah, but unlike the Russians with Chernobyl, Japan is completely cramped for space to begin with. Them evacuating the vicinity of that reactor is a major issue.
