Top 3:

The Penguin
Shogun
Dune Part 2

... worth mentioning in no particular order, although they didn't immediately spring to mind:

Masters of the Air
The Bear
Shrinking
Fallout
Furiosa

... I think The Penguin and Shogun are my favourites out of that list.

The Penguin really surprised me. Probably my favorite piece of entertainment this year. I also enjoyed Shogun.

Furiosa might be my pick for movie, but I've watched it on TV since and I've grown tired of it so right now it doesn't have my excitement (it's not Road Warrior or Fury Road though, which I can always watch).

I caught up on some old shows that weren't 2024, like The Diplomat which was really good.

I'll have to check out The Diplomat. Dune Part 2 I've only seen once in IMAX. I'll give it another watch and see if it holds up or not. I found it flawed but it's the scope and ambition of the film I appreciate -- and of course it's one of my favourite stories. I'm just glad it got made at all.

The Penguin
Dune 2

(...but the number 1 was actually Godzilla Minus One - but I was late to the party, so it was a 2024 watch for me).

Top 2024 films this year.

1. Dune: Part Two – I now have another favorite IP. Will cement itself into pop-culture. Watched it on IMAX twice (not 70mm) and have seen it a couple times on streaming. Hans Zimmer’s score was on repeat a lot this year.

2. Alien: Romulus – Not the greatest Alien film, but as a sucker for Alien IP (my second favorite IP), I still had a great time.

3. The Substance
4. Nosferatu
5. Furiosa

Watching A Complete Unknown tomorrow.

Also watched Civil War, Gladiator II, Deadpool & Wolverine, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, MaXXXine, etc. Decent flicks but ehh, a bit forgettable for me.

On my watchlist: Inside Out 2 (regret not watching it at the cinema) and Transformers One. Probably won’t see Joker: Folie à Deux lol.

Non-‘24 films I watched for the first time this year that I really loved:

Beetlejuice (1988)
The Descent - UK ending (2005)

Interstellar 10th Anniversary IMAX re-release (70 mm). Has always been one of my favorite films. My first time watching a film in 70 mm IMAX and it was a surreal, mesmerizing experience.

Favorite TV show:

Arcane: League of Legends Season 2 – Nowhere near perfect as Season 1, but it was my most anticipated TV show this year. It still had its moments and Jinx’s character arc is great. A decent ending to one of the best visual masterpieces I’ve ever seen.

Haven’t gotten around to The Penguin, Dune: Prophecy or Fallout.

I'm kind of bummed that I haven't had the same verve for watching Furiosa at home that I did in the theater. Watched it twice on the big screen. Absolutely loved it both times. When I got the 4K I watched it for about an hour, took a break and months later still have yet to finish it. It's probably the runtime. I rarely watch two and a half to three hour movies from beginning to end anymore.

Everything I’ve liked this year has been covered already 👍🏼 but I would also like to add The Beast and The Brutalist. Two movies not many people seem to be talking about but I thought were great.

Two films watched the last couple of nights I will add to my list (and almost at the top) are Challengers and American Fiction.
I really enjoyed American Fiction although I thought the performances were stronger than the resolution. It's a 2023 film, yes? On that note I really liked Past Lives as well -- a simple story with a lot of nuance and maybe especially if you've put some decades on, it stays with you a while.
