"During the opening scene, set in that original time, Gargamel discovers the Smurfs' magical village and scatters them into the woods. 'Unfortunately, Clumsy goes the wrong way into a forbidden grotto where a few other Smurfs follow,' says director Raja Gosnell (Scooby-Doo). 'Because it's a blue moon, there's a magical portal that transports them to Central Park.'

Returning home is more complicated as Gargamel pursues them. The trio pictured — along with Smurfette, Brainy and a new character, the brave-to-a-fault Gutsy — take refuge with a husband and wife (Neil Patrick Harris and Glee's Jayma Mays).

Eating the Smurfs was always Gargamel's unfulfilled goal, but that's one idea the filmmakers decided to scrap. 'We all wondered whether we would be making a family version of Sweeney Todd,' jokes producer Jordan Kerner (Charlotte's Web). Now, Gargamel simply wants to capture the Smurfs to serve as charms, whose mystical essence will make his inept magic more powerful — and dangerous."

Train. Wreck.

Teaser trailer supposedly out tomorrow. :slap

I never was a huge fan of the Smurfs, but I always found them fun to watch as a kid.
I just can't understand why they can't keep to the original storyline. It was a childrens cartoon, so why stop making Gargamel want to eat the Smurfs? It isn't too terrifying for kids, right? I mean we all grew up with them and I don't have some fear for being eaten...

Oh and why bring them to this day and age... I say keep them in the Middle Ages.

I'm usually not negative about a film, but yeah... this doesn't sound too good IMO... :ohbfrank:

Why would Papa Smurf be stupid enough to follow Clumsy Smurf and go the wrong way thus ending up in Central Park?:lol:lol:lol

I HATE when these magical creatures end up in NYC or modern times. It's just a lazy, easy way to get some fish-out-of-water laughs or instant conflict. Or do the producers think it's more relatable if they are in our world? Stupid.

I can't think of any other examples offhand except for the He-Man movie.

And yeah, if it's okay for Gargamel to want to eat smurfs in the cartoon, why isn't it okay for the movie? It's not like the cartoons were underground where it had a small limited audience and they're afraid that a wider audience would be repulsed by this. Stupid +1.

Bringing them into the real world makes it more of an "event" type thing that is needed for a feature film.

But I really don't see the appeal of making this film at all - were they really that popular? Are they STILL that popular? Are adults who grew up with them going to take their kids?

PC correctness changed the storyline. Just like they made Tom and Jerry friends and tamed down Road Runner and Coyote. :monkey4

Well Les Schtroumpfs have been around since 1958 so in theory a movie makes sense since it'd span generations but whether or not they can make it worth seeing is the real question.

This will work about as well as MOTU did in a "present day" film...but it's for kids so what the hay.
