Watching 80's Flash is like watching The Wizard of Oz. A timeless classic with familiar characters. In fact the film has so many references to WOZ. The sands running through the hour glass for example and Dale shouting like Dorothy "It won't turn over! It won't turn over!" I love the Hawkmen most of all. Brian Blessed steals the show as Vultan. I love the way the hawkmen turn their heads like birds and Biro's line "He just winged me" was great. I would love to party with the hawkmen in their floating citadel. What the new Flash lacks is FUN and Hodges' film is all about it.

Evening, everyone!

Saw you were all discussing one of my all-time favorites and just wanted to join in with my praise for what I think is the crown jewel in Dino De Laurentiis' camp comic trilogy (though DANGER DIABOLIK and BARBARELLA absolutely rock on their own merits, there's just no touching FLASH! ...ahh-ahhhh).

Happy that UNIVERSAL (sorta) finally gave the film its due with this latest anniversary DVD release (though I think the French release with the Hodges interview, etc, is the better package). Plus, Sam Jones and Melody Anderson are plunked down at the San Diego Comic Con almost every year. Can't be that hard to track them down for a little commentary or catch-up interview. Heck, Sam even has a vintage UK making-of featurette that you'd think they'd want to include. Ah well, maybe for the eventual BluRay release...

Waaay back when this forum started (and SIDESHOW was just a young upstart), I posted a list of dream figures from that embattled planet of Mongo. I'll include it here again in case someone at SIDESHOW (or even the fine folks at BIF BANG POW!) are tuning in:

FLASH GORDON (1980)
(Yes, I ask about this at every San Diego Comic Con. Come on SIDESHOW, put those UNIVERSAL contacts to go use! These would be beautiful figures!)

1/6 FLASH GORDON (Sam J. Jones) --in signature red and black Mongo guard uniform with sword and "football" eggs (SE could come with khaki slacks and iconic "Flash" t-shirt)

1/6 MING THE MERCILESS (Max Von Sydow) --in full throne room regalia with sword, goblet and that amorous ring

1/6 DALE ARDEN (Melody Anderson) --in black Mongo wedding gown or Ming's Harem outfit with rifle and heels

1/6 VULTAN (Brian Blessed) --with poseable wings, battle axe and tribute ice jewel of Fridgia

1/6 PRINCE BARON (Timothy Dalton-hey you've already done him once) with cape, sword and Arborian tree beast

1/6 AURA (Ornella Muti) --in red pilot catsuit with a set of robot gauntlet cuffs to hold her down for bore worm interrogation

1/6 KLYTUS (Paul Wyngarde) with handkerchief, hour glass and spiked, iron mask for Flash's imprisonment

Guess I'd now add those royal guardsmen which were sort of a cross between the Emperor's Royal Guard in STAR WARS and a piggy. Feel free to tack on your own dream figure...

"You've saved your Earth. Have a nice day."

P.S. I'm with you, dekadentdave, the FILMATION take on FLASH is classic. Psyched BCI final gave it the royal treatment on DVD (though I always skip the Grendel episodes --shades of Jar-Jar!)

The new 7" figures from the movie look somewhat promising... maybe (if they sell well) it could get translated into some 1/6 love?

very cheesy but will always love this movie.
Ming is one of the best bad guys ever.

.. ever see Chuck Needham's sculpts?

I bought and watched the dvd saturday with the wife.

I guess it's just one of those things where you had too see it back in the 80's to really appreciate it.

While it brought back good campy memories for me, she just couldn't get what the fuss about the re-release.

The picture on my plasma was a great a little dark on the colors. If I remember right seeing the movie in the theater the colors seemed to be really bold almost saturated.... anyways.

The soundtrack thumped in 5.1 with the sweet sound of dum dum dum dum Flash ahhhh ahhhh!!

Glad I picked it up and would definitely pick up some 1/6 figs if SSC decides to make them.

Btw If I could plunk down that kind of cash for the custom Ming a few pages back, I would do it in an instant.......awesome sculpt and eye boggling outfit :bow

I just bought the DVD this weekend as well--- I also bought the complete Buck Rogers TV series--- can't wait until I get to the Gary Coleman episode. Is it just me or is Erin Gray STILL the hotest woman to EVER be on tv?:D

Ahh, Flash and Buck, my two favorite "spinoffs" of the Star Wars era (after Battlestar Galactica, of course). Just think, if George Lucas had been granted the rights to Flash, we may never have seen Star Wars (or the campy Flash!)

Just finished watching the pilot movie for Buck--- great stuff... Always liked Tigerman. Shame he's got a Boba Fett death when Buck shoves the bomb/missile down his pants and then kicks him into oblivion... The second episode has JACK PALANCE as the baddie!!! I'm on a nostalgic kick with this...

BSG, Buck, original ST-- it's how I used to spend my Saturdays. Awesome stuff--- SIDESHOW need to get a license and call it the nostalgic line.:D

12" Colonel Wilma Deering please:monkey5

Met Erin Gray at last year's Comic Con. She signed my Buck Rogers box set. She still looks hot for her age.

Lucky S.O.B....:D

Nuff said...

Yeah.....hot!!

I think as a kid that was the only reason I watched Buck Rodgers was to see her in that spandex outfit.

Man.... had a huge crush on that woman :monkey5

BSG, I bought the box set they released sorry, the only way I can watch that is to think of it as a very dry comedy (campy and beyond),cool toys produced from it though.

I remember back in the day when Universal Studios had there BSG set-up on the back lot tour that was pretty cool.

We went there when they had the A-team theme going on through out the park:chew

But you're right about BSG-- I can't really sit through an entire episode now as it can't be taken seriously and it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo campy/dated--- the same can be said for Buck--- but I'm enjoying the trip down memory lane.

I'm glad that I picked up both the FLASH GORDON DVD and the BUCK ROGERS series DVD... Now wish SIDESHOW'd take a couple of these nostalgic pieces that us 30 somethings grew up on and let us throw them our cash.:D

Here's something interesting if (like me) you're a fan of the cult classic Flash Gordon from 1980...love this movie....
For any Flash Gordon fans out there Melody (Dale) and Sam (Flash) have done an exclusive commentary not available on the Flash Gordon DVD. This is for the fans and extremely limited. I love this movie and it's camp and was fortunate enough to meet Sam a couple of years ago and I caught up to Melody at the NY National show this weekend.
Here's the link if you want to add this cool item to your DVD:

Funny, I just saw Erin Grey at the BSG convention over the weekend. She wasn't a guest - maybe she works for Creation Ent. or something? But it was definitely her.
