It never occurs to people to store extra water until the news tells them to go buy it. :dunno

We just survived Harvey here. We had ridiculous flooding on Halloween a couple of years ago. Many people died. We were really concerned Harvey would flood us badly, but neighboring counties got it worse. I only had about $1000 in damage this time.
Now, my in-laws are here visiting from the Tampa area. They're planning to stay a little longer to wait out Irma.

Most people have water filters so u dont really think about it.

We were without public water for close to a week when we lived in Houston TX. Our neighbors had to evacuate but we were fine because of the water we had on hand. If you plan on 2 gallons per person for drinking and cleaning up, keeping a stack of water containers stored is 100% worthwhile. We use these: https://www.thereadystore.com/5-gallon-water-container-stackable . Walmart has 7 gallon ones but they're a bit heavier for the kids/ladies to lift. You can fill them with regular water in the bathtub and add 1/2 teaspoon of liquid Clorox bleach (per 5 gallons) to sanitize it. It wall also stay drinkable and free of mold for like 6 months or so that way.

Not trying to be snide bro, just looking to help you so you can sleep easy in the future. I hope you're all ok down there. Some serious weather! :horror

Oh ok. Yeah we filter too. They're not much use if you have no water to filter though. The biggest reason I store water is because of a nuclear melt down or event. After ***ushima residents were told to stay in their home for 2 weeks due to radioactive fallout, which contaminated all ground water. Only the water stored water inside the home was safe to drink. That's a worst case scenario, but it has happened, and there are plenty of nuclear power plants here in the States.

Good advice. So easy to prep for disaster it's stupid not to...

You can get a kadadyn filter straw for under 50.

As long as its not inorganic contaminants your ok....

What those Houston folks are not thinking about is all the oils and gas and other stuff that's gotten in the water from floods.....

You cannot filter that out.

Filling the bathtub might be a good idea. You can use it for flushing the toilet if you lose water pressure.

Thank u guys :duff

Hang in their. We had to deal with Matthew last year and it looks like Irma in another 24 hours. My wife and I froze a bunch of the bottled water and some plastic bags filled with it so if power goes we can use them as ice packs to help keep the fridge and freezer cooler longer. Plus we went and stocked up on the school lunch milk boxes so the kids can still have milk although if there is any real milk in those things.

No thankfully. We had a tree my wife had me transplant a few weeks before fall and I stood it back up two times before giving up until after the storm but that was the worst for us. Others around us were not as lucky; broken fences, downed trees, loss of power and people we knew closer to the beaches had their first floors flooded. The neighborhoods on the other side of the road had to evac due to being low lying and near a creek but we were spared. Ended up taking in another family that lost power for a week.

Our prayers are with everyone else in the state this weekend. The latest models just show us getting 45-65 sustained & gusts around 70-80 which can be rough but is nothing like the south and west coast is going to get.

Stay safe!

Crow and whoever else in Florida stay safe please!
