I was just thinking about how awesome Gary Oldman is. Most people here probably know this because of his roles in major geek-franchises like Batman and Harry Potter, but the guy played Ludwig van Beethoven and Sid Vicious, and did both convincingly. He played a pitch-perfect Frank Miller, Year One Jim Gordon. He has masterfully portayed an ill-fated artist, a wacked out American Irish gangster, a psychopathic killer, a dead Shakespearean bit-player, a typical conservative U.S. politician, a terrorist, freakin' Dracula, and many others. He has mastered the art of the traditional movie-villain, and he can speak "American English" as well as any native born son can.

His range and depth are pretty unrivaled, so I think he might be the best living actor that I'm familiar with. Anyone disagree?

I don't think there is an actor who can disguise himself/herself quite so well! :banana

Apparently he is a downright nice guy too, I know a few people who have bumped into him in some odd places; like playing that Games Workshop minature stuff.

REALLLY?! That just made him go from ubercool to superubercool in my book. I had to make that level up just for him.

Yeah, a friend bumped into him at the Glendale Galleria (I think) and he was in the back painting up some pieces. :D

OK...I was going to come in to this thread and start hacking on all the Oldman love.

Then I started thinking about it and decided that you all are right.

He was cool in 5th Element as well.

Yeah I know I'm pretty.

That's sort of the thing. It's hard to criticize the guy. And don't misunderstand--I'm not the world's biggest Gary Oldman fan or anything, but like you said, I started thinking about it today, and I realized that he's as talented as anyone I've seen in the movies. The whole Beethoven/Sid Vicious thing always impressed me, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Always been one of my favorites. He even made that crap Lost in Space movie worth watching. Dracula is my favorite role he played. But damn the guy REQUESTED his makeup stretch his eyelid open in Hannibal, just for creepy value. Whatta guy.

Whereas other actors of his generation have become caricatures of themselves or just rehash the same role over and over again he definitely goes out there and stretches himself. After being cast as the crazed Sirius Black I'd have never thought of him for Gordon - but he played both parts, and the more subdued Sirius, to perfection.

Oldman is the master. He is the standard I hold all other actors too, and the legacy of younger talent like Depp and Bale will stand or fall by how they compare when they reach his age.
