Truth is, 3PO wasn't a bumbling, frightened fool in the original Star Wars. That's what he started to become in Empire. Remember, in ANH, he suggested going after R2 at night, he bravely told Luke to abandone him "he's done for", he demanded R2 rescue his master, and he stood up to the stormtroopers with some quick-wittedness.

Not really how we remember 3PO now. But neither is Star Wars.

see to me that 3po line "im done for" is kitch, like in all the war movies theres that one poor sob who it would be harder to carry, and he always says that line, just leave me, im done, go save so n so
lol
so where you see heroic i see humor

SW/ESB still in my top 10 best movies ever made.

Out of 6 movies, 2 are and will forever remain perfect.

That kind of SW is over and done with.

LOTR trilogy holds the quality epic candle at the moment, but doesn't diminish what SW/ESB are.

Quality lives forever.

C-3P0 and R2-D2 served as narrators in the OT...." Oh he's been preserved in Carbonite" or the opening scene of ROTJ. C3P0 offers commentary and opinions of what was happening. Jar Jar serves no purpose in TPM.

No, I agree -- it is humorous. All those moments I mentioned are humorous. But not in a buffoony way. Not in a poo-poo way. It's funny because you know the character. It wouldn't necessarily be funny if someone else said it. That's humor. Driven by the character. Not a one-liner anyone could say and get a laugh. But unfortunately, that's exactly what 3PO ended up becoming, especially in the PT.

"This is such a drag".

not true, we would never know what happens if you stick your tongue between the engines of a pod racer HAHAHAHAHA

Sadly the damage is already done. What we need is not retirement, but some epiphany on his part that deny us the original versions of the films is childish and against the spirit of film preservation.

When I watch the OT, I always try to remember how I felt as a 7 year old, and an 11 year old; just happy at what I see and how exciting these films were. I try to blot out the 'new scenes' as a gimmick, and not to overanalyze what I am watching--hell I like nostalga. These are great films for a 7-12 year old in the '70s and '80s, they don't really hold that much for the same age group of this generation, at least from what I have seen.

As far as George Lucas retiring, all I can say is thanks for some of the greatest movie memories of my youth.:wave

Lucas always had 'this' in him. 'This' being the bad stuff. Never forget "The Holiday Special" 1978. That single effort screams of a future of tasteless and excessive exploitation and devolving great effort to the lowest common denominator.

Yeah but he always kept his "street cred" by publicly disowning it all through the 80's and 90's. Until he pulls a similar move with the Special Editions he'll be better off in retirement.

3PO stands for the subtle british humour that a very british Anthony Daniels gave him.

Even the nerd I am, I still don't know anything about the goofy walk performer that did the motion capturing for JarJar, just saw him once in a MakingOf. And I really don't care!

Lucas has to no-ones surprise become a big pussie over the years. Although in his defense it seems it was always hidden in him somewhere. This does not surprise me in the least. In fact, with someone with low testosterone such as him(LETS BE REAL) it becomes quite expected.

That said, long live SW!

1977-1983
