Casting calls for G.I. Joe 2 reveal what the Zombieland writers have in store for us

Yes, the first G.I. Joe movie wasn't exactly a masterpiece. But the sequel has a script by the Zombieland team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and it's being directed by Legion of Extraordinary Dancers creator Jon M. Chu. So you know, we oughta give it the benefit of the doubt.

In any case, the film is cranking up to production later this month — see the above photo which Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson tweeted of himself on the set, preparing to play Roadblock. And there are some casting calls that just came out, which give a few more hints about just where the sequel is going to go. Spoilers ahead...

So yeah, it looks like the sequel is going to be pretty strongly connected with the original film, even though half the original cast won't be back. Channing Tatum is back as Duke, and Ray Park is back as Snake Eyes. Also back: Byung-hun Lee as Storm Shadow. Johnson is already joining the cast, and there are rumors Bruce Willis will play the original G.I. Joe, General Joe Colton. But what other new characters will be in the film?

Obviously, the casting calls may not reflect what's in the final script, and a lot of stuff can change during filming. But according to the casting calls, the characters we'll be meeting include:

Several new Joes, including Walker, Brock and Robyn. Walker is the wise-cracker of the bunch, who's always making jokes about other guys' moms. Robyn is a gun-loving weapons expert, who talks lovingly about her latest ultra-high-tech rifle. (Which prompts Walker to say that he loves "girls with guns.") Brock is from the 'hood and he listens to a lot of Cypress Hill on his boombox while looking at pictures of his eight-year-old twin girls. (When he takes the picture out of a Ziploc bag, Walker hopes he's bringing out some of his famous pistachio cheese balls.)

At one point, when Robyn, Brock and another Joe named Sam are on the run, they take refuge in Brock's old neighborhood, where one of the homies, a tattooed stone-cold badass named Stacks, promises to help him any way he can. Stacks and Brock are like brothers from another mother, and Stacks tells Brock they can hide out in the old rec center. He can even hook Brock up with a new set of wheels, which are pimped out but "on the low." (The joke is that the wheels are clearly not on the low, because they're too fancy and loud.)

Mouse, who is the newest recruit on the team played by Joseph Mazzello. He's a Southern boy, "18 going on 11." He's got no real combat experience, but he's played a lot of Call of Duty. And when he goes up against one of the top Joes in a test to see who can pull a hand grenade out of a big pool out of water with their teeth, Mouse wins. He raises his arms in victory, and spits out the grenade, saying "Bang." The crowd of soldiers watching this goes nuts.

The Young Storm Shadow. Looks like we'll be getting some flashbacks to the childhoods of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Blind Master (played by RZA!) talks to Storm Shadow about his early mistakes in voice-over, while we watch the young Storm Shadow fleeing the Dojo. Blind Master asks who had the most to gain from driving Storm Shadow from the Dojo: the rival who drove Storm away, or the "man into whose arms you were chased." We see that Storm Shadow took refuge with a "burly peasant" who gave him a blanket and cooked for him by a fire. And later, we see the burly peasant, who's really a super-ninja in disguise, killing a ninja master.

Lots and lots of World Leaders There's some kind of summit, in which everybody is agreeing on reducing their nuclear missiles, and it all goes horribly wrong, of course. The U.S. has launched all of its birds in the air, and everybody is trying to decide whether to retaliate and cause World War III. People say awesome ____ like, "Let history record who was responsible for this madness." And "There can be no winners!"

And then Zartan — the master of disguise who replaced the U.S. President in the first movie — basically tells everybody that their countries can serve him or die. He totally wants it all, man. Zartan tells the French muckety muck that from now on "You're reporting to moi." But at least Russia is defiant, telling Zartan "You've only succeeded in uniting us... against you." Separately, we see the Pakistani President, who is standing by his decision to harbor terrorists, suddenly getting assassinated with a titanium blade.

Lecter, a new villain who joins forces with Zartan in infiltrating the White House. (And it turns out the President's approval ratings have skyrocketed since he turned evil.) Lecter has been busted out of prison, so he can develop every high-tech weapon the baddies can possibly imagine... and some they can't. Lecter and his friends Smith and Jones are holding a U.S. Senator prisoner and interrogating him. "It's called a water board... but I never get bored," gloats Jones.

All in all, a movie about an evil mastermind impersonating the U.S. President and starting World War III, with lots and lots of high-tech weaponry, could be just about the greatest thing ever. We'll find out on June 29, 2012 when this bad boy hits theaters.

What an Abominable TURD!! the spoiler story is Horrible!!

Re: GI Joe 2

why are they pulling characters out of thin air?

To make the movie easier to ignore. I've never understood that though. Even good movies like the first Bay Transformers and X-Men: First Class do it. Could be an ego thing by the filmmakers. Who knows.

I don't mind if they make a few characters up as along as the script is well written and the movie well directed.

As far X-men FC goes, I'm not sure they pulled many characters out of thin air (i.e. created them up for the movie.) At least all of the mutants were from the comic series, the only thing they changed was the timeline. And there so much time travel and alternate dimensions in the comic series that I feel FC fit right in as a possible alternate timeline/dimension.

Anyhow, I think the rumor spoiler above is a bit made up? "Mouse"? You mean the kid from the Matrix? lol Who knows? any how hope this movie is much better than the last.

Re: GI Joe 2

I am really trying to hold judgement until I see it, but there is so much crap I am seeing. they have a plethera of characters to use and they make up their own? wtf?

Re: GI Joe 2

This is probably fake. The screenwriters are pretty damn good at writing...they wouldnt do something like this.

But i've been wrong before.....:(

Re: GI Joe 2

With production about to begin on the still-officially-untitled G.I. Joe sequel, Walter Goggins has joined the cast. Variety has the news, saying that Goggins will play an original character named Warden Nigel James.

The film, to be directed by John Chu (Step Up 3D, Never Say Never), will continue the toy-inspired world depicted in 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra with a primarily new cast (except for the returning Channing Tatum as Duke, Ray Park as Snake Eyes and, likely, Byung Hun-lee as Storm Shadow). Newcomers include Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Elodie Yung as Jinx, DJ Cotrona as Flint, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, RZA as The Blind Master, Joseph Mazzello as Mouse and Ray Stevenson as Firefly. Bruce Willis is also said to be in negotiations for the part of Genreal Joe Colton, the original G.I. Joe.

Goggins is best known for his role on "The Shield" and for his continuing role on "Justified." He also recently appeared in Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens and will play a part in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln.

G.I. Joe 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 29, 2012.

Re: GI Joe 2

I've seen Walter Goggins in The Shield, he is a great actor. But why waste his talents for this Sigma 6 thing happening to GI JOE.. Spider Man was revamped.. Why can't they do the same with GI JOE?
