I've seen The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds and Precious, all are excellent films. As much as I'd love to see Hurt Locker and Basterds take it, I know that Precious is going to take this category and deservedly so. It was a very raw and powerful movie, not normally the type of film I'd go see at the theater, but it was very good.

I'm surprised District 9 only got one nomination! But glad to see Inglourious Basterds up there for a few! :rock

The Globes are bought anyway so none of these noms mean anything, but that's not to say that some of these aren't indeed deserving. As for The Road I'd guess that with the Weinsteins hurting financially and spending so much to get The Reader in last year they probably can't afford a push for The Road this go around.

Thanks for posting this. I won't be watching it this year. No one interesting I want to see.

It doesn't quite make sense how the film is credited with the writing but not the actual production, oh well. :huh

The Golden Globes hardly matter in the end (though they do sway last minute Oscar voters) - they aren't the Guild awards.

I've seen this opinion many times, is there actual proof that people pay to have their movies nominated? And is that any different than the 'for your consideration' Oscar ads that cost tons of money? Awards shows are pretty silly, IMO. It's like beauty pageants for movies.

The bad rep for the Globes is because of the journalists who are in the organization. The "Foreign Press" aren't actually the best and brightest of the foreign press, but mostly 2nd tier entertainment reporters who like to go on junkets. It's not that they are given cash for films to get nominated, but studios might fly them all expenses paid to a junket, give them all kinds of swag and special privileges for screenings and such.

As opposed to the Academy which are professionals working in the industry.

Ah, so they are the only ones deciding who wins? no votes or anything?

I still think that the Oscars are still like a beauty pageant for movies though, complete with their 'for your consideration' campaigns - it just seems like whoever holds a lot of sway in the industry gets nominated/wins - not necessarily the best. Or, they award someone because they've been nominated a lot and lost every other time, or they have a long and illustrious career, etc.

There's no good way to do it, I guess. As with anything that relies on a voting process, opinions can be swayed by cash or favors and the best 'campaigners' usually win.

Sure there are votes - by the Foreign Press Association, about 50-60 journalists from 2nd tier newspapers.

And I'd agree that the Oscars are sentimental - actors make up the largest voting block of the Academy and we all know what actors are like. But the actors only vote for the acting categories and best picture. Writers vote for writers, directors for directors, etc. So there is more credibility to the whole procedure. The campaigns help of course - the more that a title is in front of someone, the more likely they are to remember to nominate it.

I haven't seen most of these movies...so i't's hard for me to give my predictions yet...but I'll be sure to submit mne before teh show!
