I might take some heat for this. I have all the respect in the world for him, but I think Hitchcock's rubric for a 'great' movie is a crock of ____.

He pretty much broke his own rule in Psycho with that completely unnecessary (and unnecessarily long) scene at the end in which the psychiatrist practically relays redundant expository information about Norman Bate's condition, even though most people could intuit what was wrong with him via having seen the prior 99% of the film. The final shot with Norman in the cell almost makes up for it. It should've just been that from the beginning.

Psycho is a great film.

I definitely don't disagree. I have nothing but love for Hitchcock (and have enjoyed introducing my wife to all of his movies), but the "great" definition is full of holes.

But it's a fun enough jumping off point for a thread, so it works well enough for that.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
1) The entire opening sequence
2) Marion in the bar/Toht coming to the bar
3) Cairo fight
4) Ark opening

Unforgiven
1. Schofield Kid kills his first man. Munny tells him, "It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have."

2. After English Bob talks all this trash about Americans and then he gets to town and Little Bill kicks his ass.

3. Ending when Munny show up at the saloon. "You just shot an unarmed man." "He should have armed himself if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend."

Tombstone
1. When Wyatt shows up to the Oriental and slaps Johnny Tyler (Billy Bob Thorton). "Are you gonna do something? Or just stand there and bleed?"

2. Saloon with Ringo and Doc. That whole scene is classic. Stupid Ike Clanton: Listen, Mr. Kansas Law Dog. Law don't go around here. Savvy?

3. Train station as Morton is leaving. "So run, you cur... RUN! Tell all the other curs the law's comin'! You tell 'em I'M coming... and hell's coming with me, you hear?... Hell's coming with me!"

And just because it's my all-time favorite scene, but as a whole the movie is okay.
A Fistful of Dollars
The Man with no Name goes back and gets an apology from the men who scared his mule.

"I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it."

Yeah definitely it's a great idea for a thread, even though I disagree with the 'great' distinction in question.

Anyway, I'm going to pick Galaxy Quest as mine. It's one-two punch of great sci-fi and great comedy. One of my favorite movies.

1. Any scene featuring Sam Rockwell (or when he starts crying about how his character is the type that always dies first)
2. Any scene featuring Tony Shalhoub (or when the ship is falling apart and he nonchalantly says "We need a new beryllium sphere, just fyi")
3. Any scene featuring Alan Rickman ("By Grabthar's Hammer, you shall be avenged.")

Fight club

Everything about film just great characters story everything awesome twist and ending.

Yes absolutely :lecture:lecture:lecture

any 3 great scenes, do you know how general that is, ANY movie has 3 great scenes, some movies have 10 great scenes, 20,

really bad movies, the worst movies you ever saw, Probably Has 3 good scenes in them, even if you hate a movie a lot, chances are that horrible movie has 3 good things you liked, Try it,

I hated Dark Shadows.
3 great scenes:
the beginning showing the history of Barnabas,
when Barnabas comes back, kills everyone and sees the Mcdonalds Sign
the Alice Cooper party...
the sex scene between Barnabas and the witch,

of course that is just a dumb example, maybe those scenes are not that great, but it still applies, think of any bad movie, and you will probably find 3 "great" scenes

and a Movie with No Bad scenes, simply Doesn't exist, even Lord of the rings or The Dark Knight have their couple of scenes that were not as great, even it if is a 10 second scene, just doesn't make much sense

any 3 great scenes, do you know how general that is, ANY movie has 3 great scenes, some movies have 10 great scenes, 20,

Once again, the rules are:

1. Three great scenes
2. No bad ones

And I really don't think the idea of a "great scene" is a simple one-liner. If it's a dialogue driven scene then I think it needs to be on the level of Jack Nicholson's turkey sandwich order in "Five Easy Pieces" or Robert Shaw's Indianopolis tale in "Jaws."

If you think that every movie has at least three scenes on the level of those then I think you're very easy to please. :) Just out of curiousity what were the three scenes that you found to be "great" in "GI Joe: Rise of Cobra" and "Batman & Robin?"

and a Movie with No Bad scenes, simply Doesn't exist, even Lord of the rings or The Dark Knight have their couple of scenes that were not as great, even it if is a 10 second scene, just doesn't make much sense

Wait a minute, first you say all movies fit the criteria and then immediately after say no movies do? Figure it out man. ;)

And for the record:

"not as great" scene does not necessarily = "bad" scene

"The Fellowship of the Ring" absolutely does not have one single bad scene.

Jaws:
1. "You're gonna need a bigger boat."
2. The drunk chat before the shark attacks the boat.
3. Quint

what I said is, probably most movies fit the 3 great scenes criteria,

but then no movies fit the NO Bad Scenes criteria,

that's how stupid what he said is, because it contradicts itself, Im not the one that said it bub,
I think all movies probably have 3 good scenes, and at least one bad one, even movies like Jaws, Indiana Jones, no movie is perfect,

this really makes no sense at all, and it is not my fault it doesn't

I wasn't talking about one liners either, the scenes in Dark Shadows I was explaining were long, at least more than a minute long,

Star Trek (2009)

1. Opening scene: George Kirk's heroic sacrifice
2. Spocks rejects the Vulcan Space Academy and joins Starfleet instead.
3. Captain Pike's rescue

No, you said:

I think you'll have a hard time finding anyone to agree with that opinion.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Jaws
The Empire Strikes Back
The Fellowship of the Ring

...to name a few with no "bad" scenes. Keep in mind: bad means BAD. Not "okay," or "could have been better" but BAD.

We're not talking perfect we're talking great. :)

We're not talking perfect we're talking great. :)

I guess I see what you are saying now, And you are right, but this is still not a good way to name great movies though, I see your point,
but this still feels too open for talking about great movies

Jaws:
1. "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Frack, how could I forget about Jaws.
That drunken scene freaken awesome. That whole Indianapolis story. Man, that just gives me chills. Show me way to home. I'm tired and... fantastic!

TERMINATOR 2: (1991)

1. Biker Bar
2. Saving Sarah Connor
3. T-800 vs. the police
4. T-800 vs. T-1000
5. T-1000's termination

ALIEN (1979)

1. Derelict & Space Jockey
2. Chest Buster
3. Alien vs. Brett
4. Alien vs. Parker & Lambert

MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS (2012)

1. Thor vs. Iron Man vs. Cpt. America
2. Thor vs. Hulk
3. Hulk punching Leviathan/Avengers Assemble!
4. Hulk smashing Loki

Miller's Crossing

1) Fantastic opening scene with the exchange between Leo and Caspar. Very quotable.
2) Scene in the woods with Tom and Bernie Bernbaum
3) The assassination attempt on Leo

I could probably imagine some thinking a scene or two was bad (like maybe the scene with Sam Raimi shooting the guy who comes out of the bar), but I like all of them. Great film, and a greatly underrated film.

I think the criteria laid out here would apply to numerous Coen Brothers movies.

A History of Violence
1) "Heroic" diner scene
2) Showdown at Richie's mansion
3) Sitting at the dinner table at the end
Though in that film, it is more great as a sum of all its parts than just a few scenes sticking out.

The dark knight rises

:the chase
:the fight bane vs batman
:cat woman
:the climb
:the ending

Batman Begins
1. Training on the ice montage 'the will to act'
2. I'm Batman
3. Does it come in Black

The Dark Knight
1. Bank Robbery
2. Interrogation scene
3. Mob scene

The Dark Knight Rises
1. Sewer Fight
2. Climb out of pit
3. Ending 10 minutes

Each of then has at least one bad scene but I think that definition is bogus :lol

Other films I'd consider great but don't have the energy to list scenes
1. Godfather I and II
2. The Shawshank Redemption
3. Heat
4. Pulp Fiction
5. Inception
6. Apocalypse Now
7. The Scent of a Woman
8. Taxi Driver
9. Dr Zhivago
10. Lawrence of Arabia
11. Roman Holiday
12. LOTR trilogy
13. Original Star Wars trilogy
14. Jaws
15. Alien
16. The Sound of Music
17. Gladiator
18. A Beautiful Mind

...
