Being Marveled out is a real condition! I'm more excited about Asmus and their cool Kurt figure today than pretty much all of HT's CW offerings. Usually for me, the cycle goes like this:
1. License announcement (pretty much all Marvel and DC are guaranteed)
2. Convention prototypes or full specs and pics revealed on HT Facebook
3. The usual analysis, discussion, pre-ordering
4. Secret Base and magazine pics
5. Another new figure gets announced
6. The film it's from comes out, a hurdle is crossed in my mind, part of the hype for the figure dies
7. Delays
8. In-hand pics from HK, come here for overall opinions
9. From all of these combined, I now feel like I have the figure, with Marvel and DC there's always another chance down the line with a better headsculpt which is number one for me.
10. Cancelling the pre-order
11. Feeling jaded from the constant bombardment of CBM's across all social media
12. Get hyped about smaller films but only because they have merchandise
13. Start nitpicking those figures because they don't meet HT's gold standards
14. HT announces more new figures, get sucked back into the CBM hype because the next new film is coming out soon and more new figures will be announced, making it harder to ignore and focus on the other, more nostalgic figures. Their main attraction was that they have never been made, and you feel lucky they're being made at all. Then their final product is a gutpunch (Blitzway Tyler Durden)
15. The cycle begins anew.
Right now, the only glimmers are companies like Asmus, Blitzway and Star Ace. Threezero have ruined their chances by announcing great licenses and not following up that potential with satisfactory products, so fans will drop that 200 plus elsewhere. For what these companies are charging per figure, each one demands perfection or at least as close as you can get to it before it leaves the factory. The fact that HT released that Han Solo is ridiculous. They tweaked it, made it worse, and released that. When there are sculptors out there that can and do nail Ford's likeness, why aren't they hiring these people, if even on a freelance basis?
People like Adam Gu, Hossein Diba and Toria Casarro can get actors likenesses down exactly, and yet they aren't hired. I get that they might not want to work for HT, or prefer the freelance thing, but Jesus, it's unacceptable for HT to be charging what they charge, something that's only gone up since they began, and their products seem to be getting worse from a likeness standpoint as they continue. Something that gets preorders, in my opinion, is likeness to the character/actor. If that's missing, what's the point? If you disagree, check out the fans dropping hundreds for the headsculpt alone.
