To get the whole experience, you will need to watch all the versions back to back.
BladeRunner is a re-occuring dream of Holden! He is living Dadoes but is reading Blade Runner by Alan E. Nourse. His repeating nightmare is a blend of his real life, the novel and what he dreams is going on in the outside world. This is why the pain of mortality and angst about existence is the primary theme.
Also, the eyes are clues as well as the fans. Remember the overhead fans in the room where Holden gets shot? Then, fans repeat in odd places throughout the story. Finally, near the end of the film, there are even fans outside in the rain...doing what exactly??
The entire story spirals out of control with such imagery...just like a dream...a dream that is ultimately about freedom and escape.
Ever wonder why it is Holden's eye that starts the story?
