Well I got the noggin in the mail yesterday and still not sure what to think. It doesn't look bad but the sculpt itself is very generic and could never be repainted and have a likeness to the original photo. Basically the photo is printed directly on the resin sculpt. If we don't end up with a sideshow Marion or another talented sculptor doesn't tackle her I guess I'll make do. Anyway onto the pics this is the one I submitted, fairly generic pic of Karen Allen.

And this is what I got in the mail

Thanks for posting the pics! Just looking at the photos, the sculpt looks pretty good to me. Did you just submit one photo? I wonder if the chances of getting an accurate sculpt increase with more "data" for them to work off of.

From what you wrote, it sounds like there's just a "one size fits all" head sculpt and some facial details get printed on that, to give the illusion of facial detail. Looking at the website I thought the sculpt was crafted using 3D printing or something to actually have the correct shape, with the printing just finishing the illusion.

Anyway, I'm still intrigued by the entire process. Maybe when my financial situation is in better shape I'll give this thing a shot.

No hair? Do they just expect you to provide the hair or did you specifically want it bald?

I wanted it bald until I could figure out what version of Marion I want to attempt.

I sent in the front picture and a side pic. I'm sorry the side pics are blurry I'll try to take a few more later tonight

Its what I call a good arms length sculpt. You could use a standard barbie hair for that picture.

Before everybody gets confused, THIS IS NOT A SCULPT OF MARION! This is a stock female head, much like the buck, with the actress' likeness printed onto the blank head.

Can it really be a stock female head, though? If it were, the side view would look completely off, and the same for every head.

Why use resin at all then? Obviously I haven't looked at the actual item, but I'd think there'd be little point in sending in a side-view shot if it didn't get translated into the final product.

You can say it's a freaky coincidence that the blank head somewhat resembles Allen's features, but trust me, that's the standard female head. Plus, the shadows in the print are visually deceptive, giving it more features than it actually has. If you had it in hand, trust me, you'd think it's crap. :lol

I assume they use the side shot to meld it with the front view so they can print the entire face. I'm betting a Barbara Streisand or Bette Midler would come out not looking anything like them just because of the standard nose on the head.

Hmm. It would be great if we could put that to the test!

If this particular service isn't using 3D printing or rapid prototyping to create actual sculpted heads, then somebody else ought to, because the technology is certainly there, from what I can tell.

I thought that's what most of the major companies Hasbro, Jakks Pacific and the like were doing with RealScan.

I think it'd basically be like painting a portrait, the head has no identifyable details no wrinkles, no sculpted eyebrows or laughlines. With a pic printed on it it is a kind of optical illusion, but basically it'd be like buying a store mannequin and paint the face to look like whomever you want. I'm still hoping if SS isn't gonna make a Marion that one of the customizers on the board offers one up soon.

Depends. With the current headache, likely there'll need to be one individual to pay for everything to be done and he'll have to cast it, or find somebody, maybe even the original sculptor, to do so and then sell the recasts. Add to that the fact that per the rules, this will all now need to be done via PMs. :lol
