Has Rising Figure Prices Forced You To Change What You Collect?

It most definitely has. Before, I could purchase a figure here and there if I thought is was cool for my shelves. But now, I am sticking to just superheroes and even then I am being very picky. I am scared to think how much the HT Hulk will be.

Yup. Most I ever spent on a figure was 120 bucks, and that was money I made from selling an s-ton of stuff first. And that wasn't the retail price for the figure; a guy needed money and that was all I had at the time.

Now I get a head here and there, and customize to look "like" my favorite movie person, but otherwise there are too many 1:1 things that need my money.

For the most part yes. I can still afford to buy what I want, but what I'm finding is that I don't want to spend that much. Avengers Loki is an awesome looking figure, but I have a hard time reconciling in my mind spending $220 on an action figure that's going to sit on a shelf.

High price tags haven't forced anything except to strengthen my conviction not to spend dollars for meh products.

I don't mind paying higher prices if the product warrants. I was more lenient towards imperfection paying $120 - $140 per figure. The prices today topping $200+ for the same imperfections is inexcusable IMO. I won't knitpick the color of clothes (jackets, socks etc) moreso the head sculpt. It has a passing resemblance of the actor, it is an easy pass.

I find it odd that today $200-ish is a ridulous slap in the face price, but two months to a few weeks ago $215 for Captain America and $220 for P2 is okay let alone Joker for $275 without major complaints about the prices being too high :cuckoo:

There was a line, but people have freely stepped over that line on more than one occasion leading HT to increase that line across all licenses based on it's customers spending habits.

If people lap up these $215+ figures, why should HT feel the need to charge below $200 for others?

Seriously? People been complaining about the rising cost for some time. I agree, it doesn't help their cause if they continue ordering everything announced :cuckoo:

The recent Dx Joker is the first pre-order I have (for any company) since 89 Batman and Joker which is almost a year. Why pay retail when a few mos. later most can be available less than retail?

Yeah i agree people have been complaining about the prices for a while, but it doesn't seem to follow through for the majority it seems.

They'll say things like "hmmm, hate the price, this other figure was less only ___ months ago, how can they justify this?"

Then they'll continue "bit the bullet and ordered"

Talk about mixed messages :dunno

i've only order 3 figures this year but that's more of an interest thing than price, if they were cranking out figures that i'd be ordering then i'd be more concerned personally i suppose.

Increased prices are a big issue for customers, but from hot toys point of view, they are being indirectly told by their customers that they're willing to pay over $200 for a bunch of different figures, so they don't feel the need to charge less for others. It's the customers ordering these figures at these prices that causing them to rise imo

Absolutely, we'd all do the same $$$$$$$

Oh yeah, it has definitely changed what I buy a lot! Now I just get the major characters and too hell with villains or secondary characters. Moreover, I used to buy two, one for display and one for storage. No such thing now! Those prices have become impossible and will be the undoing of HT (well, I hope because this is the only way we can consider ever going back to more reasonnable and justified prices!)
But as long as there are suckers (and yes, I count myself among these) to buy toys at these outrageous prices, they'd be dumb not take the plunder!

To be fair the rising costs seem to be in line with much better head sculpts so overall I don't mind. If they were still producing figures of the same quality at these prices then I wouldn't be purchasing any.

I wouldn't say it's changed by buying behaviour though, if I love it I will buy it, if not I pass.

I used to buy Sideshow figures regularly. I have only pre-ordered and bought one Hot Toys figure. I have bought other company's figures that offered more value for the dollar. I now basically collect head sculpts with rare exception. None of these figures are worth $200-$300 in my opinion. Years ago I might have wasted $500 on some limited edition figure but now I am a lot more discriminating.

it hasent changed my collecting, after finding this board last year i have spent at least 3 grand more on figs than i usually would

:goodpost::exactly:

Anybody that spends $220 on an action figure that's going to sit on a shelf would be better off spending the money on a good psychiatrist to find out why a grown man would spend that kind of money on an over priced action figure that only cost Hot Toys $25 - $40 to manufacture.

^ if people want them they'll pay, it's not like there's many anymore that aren't $200+ these days. It's either quit or pay it, there's little middle ground, i'd say the majority will pay it :dunno

And tell us sir, what is it that you collect that is so worthy of your money?

I have seen grown men (and women) spend millions on things that will sit on a shelf or hang on a wall that cost less than $25 - $40 to make.

I have recently spent that much on a fancy night out with my girlfriend (nice dinner and a show). I used to spend $150-$200 every couple weeks going snowmobilng in the mountains for a weekend.

If you enjoy something and does not hurt anyone else who cares how much it costs.

At least with these if i sell them tomorrow or in 20 years I should get some money back.
