Does he just overextend himself? Personally I thought Pacific Rim was meh but his other films are pretty amazing!

yeah basically, half of it is that he bites more than he can chew and he has too many projects he wants to do
And second the studios jerk him around and wont help him do his movies. Mountain of Madness was pushed around over and over until Prometheus killed it. The Hobbit failure took a lot from him.
