I do wish HT used lighter fur on that Dewback instead of that mossy green.
I guess it would have stuck out a lot more then. Looking purely at the comparison, perhaps they should have scaled the entire beast back a bit in colour to be more like the SS ??

Who knows. Perhaps they got re-designed Dewback models etc from the Mandalorian and went with that ?

meh...

Why in the world would I, or anyone for that matter, upgrade to this when I still have this guy in my collection!!! :cuckoo:

This is the comparison photo I want to see..... :lol

Yeah the Mando Dewback has slightly greenish fur but the ANH version's fur is blondish and brown at the top, then a darker more reddish brown toward the lower body. The lobby cards often have a greenish tint like a lot of 1970s photo prints so it can appear slightly green so maybe HT got thrown by that.

The fur was added to cover the seams where the new head and giant iguana tail met up with the rhino museum body, so it should really go all the way around the base of the tail rather than just the top of the tail as HT did it.

I do miss the rhino ribs on the torso/belly of the HT sculpt because they are pretty clearly visible on the classic Dewback pic.

It is kinda fascinating how the Dewback has basically gotten redesigned in every single on-screen appearance. I think I like this look the most, which I take it is essentially the Mando design. It feels like the best of all worlds -- lots of '77 elements, but blended with a dynamic living-creature body and reasonably strong legs.

Yeah my custom 1/6 Dewback project was tricky as someone used to precisely matching what is onscreen or in behind the scenes pics. The Dewback has had more major design changes than anything SW related.

I hated the ugly 1997 SE Dewback redesign, the key sin being getting rid of the iconic Fred Pearl sculpted head that we all know and love. The rhino ribs and rhino style feet (I also hate the 1990s change to chicken/t-rex type feet) were non-negotiable because they are seen in 1976 BTS pics, as well as the bluish lip/beak and orange-color eye.

Yet I changed the legs to be thicker and made the scale pattern more uniform (prop head has big scales, rhino torso has no scales, iguana tail has fine scales.) I also made the creature larger by 15% because it didn't look right matching the prop actual size because its always seen in low angle making it appear bigger than it was.

The OG Dewback looks like this, so not much to work with. Therefore they are forced to fill in the considerable blanks.

I guess the budget only allowed for close ups of the head which looked decent.

The prop had an articulated tail, head, and front leg, operated by poles from inside (in some pics you can see the latex skin hanging open under the belly where someone climbed inside.)

The '97 design reboot and added imagery proved GL had a real love of the Dewback. Probably because the mid 1970s Ron Cobb lizard+rider painting was so inspirational. The Dewback harkens back to the core images and ideas that inspired GL to create SW.

There are quite a lot of behind the scenes pics of the Dewback (the famous promo one we all know technically is behind the scenes because it has the "look sir droids" trooper in the saddle unlike in the movie) so you can get a pretty clear view of it, as sorta funky as it was.

These rarer pics of the "back" side views of the Dewback show that the rear Tornister (WWI German backpack made of cowhide)/saddlebag on that side is actually different from the other three - it is the radio operator version, even though both SSC and now HT made all four saddlebags the same.

The pic also shows that the pole only has a bare-metallic part at one end, not at both ends like SSC and HT did. The pole also has a thin wire visible running along it, perhaps for a "sparks" special effect as the rider controlled the beast in close ups that were never filmed.
I'm just glad they got rid of the Chicken Legs which the SS version suffers a bit from.

They got rid of the skinny chicken leg look, but still stuck with the clawed chicken/t-rex style feet. The Dewback prop, like the Kenner toy, had elephant/rhino type feet, so that's what my custom Dewback has.
Sadly, that's the one Hasbro made for its 12inch line in the 90's/00's.
The 12" Hasbro one from the 1990s almost seems like its an original creation by Hasbro. While the 1997 3 3/4" Dewback mimicked the SE design pretty closely, the 12" one looks quite different again. The newer 3 3/4" Hasbro Dewback (from maybe 10-12 years ago) was a similar look, but much larger in scale compared to the rider. Then for the 6" scale version they went back to something closer to the 1977 design.

This is my Hasbro 3 3/4" Dewback (from maybe 2010-2012 or so) which has t-rex legs/feet and that ugly iguana head that began with the 1997 redesign. What a bizarre thing to abandon the classic 1977 Dewback head, one of the most memorable images from the original film's release.

There are so many curious things that George tinkered with because the technology was available to do so. Inserting the Jabba scene back into ANH with the awful CGI Jabba was maybe more egregious than bastardizing the Dewey...but not by much.

I'm so confused as to why both CGI Jabbas in that scene were so terrible looking, and also with all the obsession of adding pupils into Ewok eyes and changing Shaw's eye color to match Hayden's (not t mention eyebrow removal) that they never got around to fixing that CGI Jabba.

A 2025 CGI rendition of ROTJ83 Jabba in that D94 scene is a change I'd love to see.

Yeah, that would be a worthwhile endeavor...a 2025 Special Edition where they fix all the S**t they broke :)

I'm pretty sure you can credit the Prequel Trilogy for the look of the post-Special Edition toys from Hasbro. Like I said, it got redesigned every time it showed up on screen.
