You can order the polished version, option. But even still, 3D printing is rough. If this is going to work were going to have to use the material to paint on and smooth things out before any casting can be done. Maybe it won't be required with the polished version, but I doubt it. It will still have some rough spots.

Sounds good. So is that your plan.. To make a smooth "buck" and then recast some nice smooth helmet sculpts? If so then count me in :hi5:

Also what's going to be your solution for the Hovi mic tips? Sorry for all the questions I'm just a bit of an obsessive where stormtroopers are concerned!!

No, not looking for a quick buck. I'm just hoping we can find a means to a true 1/6 scale prop replica of an ANH stunt helmet. :wink1:

I don't even want to cast, to be honest, I've never done it before. But I need at least 7 helmets and I don't want to have to go through all that work for all 7 of them, not to mention paying the $40.00 per helmet from Shapeways. So we need a good caster to step in.

Also, I have mic tips that were cast from Marmit kits. So we can cast those too.

Right now I have 6 Sandtroopers and 2 Stormtroopers...although in this photoshop it looks like I have six.

Ha ha no sorry I should of explained! When I meant "buck" that's a term used for a master sculpt from which which copy "pulls" are made from ( to much of me reading about how the original helmets were made ). Sorry I wasn't trying to imply that you want to make money. But I think you're right if we can get a good caster to step in then we're really onto something here. I respect you're opinion and if you think that the HT stormtroopers captures the character then that's great. But I've been obsessed by stormtroopers since the tender age of 4 when I watched SW for the first time back in 77. Ever since then I have studied pictures of the original armour and read articles about the sculpters and makers of it. I'm Lucky enough to own an RSPropmasters set of armour which is pretty much as close as you can get to owning an original suit. So as the original armours "DNA" is burned into my memory I can't help but see how far away these figures are from the original character that they are attempting to depict. Don't get me wrong, I think there great but I can't be the only high end collector out there that craves for an exact replica of the original character "walts and all" shrunken down into 1/6 scale can I? Especially with the advancement in 3D scanning these days, I'm sure that they could do it? I don't know maybe I'm asking too much.

The most accurate 1/6 helmet ever made is the Gentle Giant Stormtrooper mini-bust, though it has the mic tips a bit too long and the helmet itself is a tad too small. But in the end the sculpt itself is the best there is, and for a simple reason, they scanned a screen used helmet and scaled it down. That didn't happen with their Stormtrooper statue, neither the new mini-bust. In 1/3 the most accurate is the SFS scaled helmet, once available at RS Prop Masters also present on the Judge Dredd 1/3 Stormtrooper statue.

I'm also a big Stormtrooper fan, my general collecting focus being Original Trilogy Imperials and Troopers, and particular focus being Stormtroopers - you can check out my collection thread in my signature. I'm a so called "rivet counter" regarding accuracy. If you look at my older posts in this thread, and HT Sandtrooper thread, as well as Sideshow Stormtrooper and Sandtrooper threads, you'll see my opinion regarding the lack of decent accuracy on SSC figures and statues. HT Stormie is much improved over the SSC, but not perfect. Still I like the HT figure a lot, I own 2 tall versions, a short one, a Spacetrooper, 2 orange pauldron Sandies, and waiting for white (and black) pauldron Sandie, ROTJ Stormtrooper and Han Stormie.

I have a few of those myself and yes I agree completely. The Gentle Giant Helmet is by far the best out there.

Oh, haha...what do I know? Ok...well let's see what happens. I've been watching videos of people who have purchased the polished plastic from shape ways and their videos on painting and smoothing out he texture. There's another level of fine finish for printing 3D, but it's much more pricey and it wasn't an option on that link anyway.

Not sure if anyone has tried this yet but you can get a half decent ESB stunt look with the hot toys helmet by just painting over the existing teeth with some matt black and adding some more paint either side. IMG_1277.jpgIMG_1279.jpg

That looks great, Adam1138! I've been wanting to add some scuffing to my troopers like that, too. Those pics could pass for full scale. :clap

Yes and also the hand guards are wrong for the ESB version. Just having a play with the helmet really 😀

I was watching ROTJ and I really don't like the look of the stormtroopers in that movie. Something is off with the helmets. I'm pretty happy with the ANH ones. Can't see myself buying other variants.

The reason the Stormtroopers look bad in RoTJ is because when they were making new helmets the mold collapsed, causing the helmets to look squished on the left side.

Has anyone gotten a conversion on the Gold Stormtrooper from the Wait List lately? I got on the wait list like half an hour after the figure sold out and really expected a conversion, but it hasn't happened yet...
