The more I look at it the more I'm coming around to the sculpt. Looks really good in the SB photo as well.

Only jarring problem for me is the same problem TFA Luke had where the clothes are just too clean.

Between this RIDICULOUS Melania Trump ensemble and Jannah's Pat Benatar music video outfit, this movie looks to be primed for a Golden Raspberry for costume design alone.

I have to agree that Rey's outfit is a good example of design over function. Why does she wear arm bands? What are the wrist-wraps for? It look like the art department drew up a really nice sketch of this get-up and everyone said "Ooooh I like that outfit"... and it was done.

Plus, why does she maintain the same look? Who makes her clothes now -- the Resistance? Does she specify a certain "scavenger" look?

And lastly, the design is too "modern earth" for me -- the hoodie with Ugg boots just jumps out as too contemporary Earth 2000.

What, are girls in the SW universe not allowed to have a fashion sense or any style in what they wear? ;) Clearly Rey has a certain look that she feels most comfortable in, and it also fits with the character that she would try to hold onto that life on Jakku in this way.

And personally I just think it looks awesome and is a nice evolution of the outfit from TFA. Although I do agree HT made it a little too white and clean.

It will darken during production as everything (ie skin tone, hair color, etc).

You mean the planet she's been dreaming about getting away from all her life? Yeah, I can see her not wanting to change her Jakku style.

Look how fast Luke changed his style. He couldn't wait to put on those Commander fatigues. Then finally the Jedi gear.

Rey has zero growth through the movies, and her wardrobe choice reflects that.

I think since they had to use previously unused shots with Fisher, they could not diverge from TFA look drastically.
Personally, I find armbands beautiful and wish they kept them at TROS.

Resistance outfit Rey ftw. She probably couldn’t wait to get into some actual clothes that made her look part of a unit, only to ultimately end up back in essentially the same style clothes she started out in. :lol

That's it, they kind of had their hands tied with that one. I still think the TFA Scavenger Rey look (especially with hood and glasses) is among the best designs in the ST.

The opening TFA introduction scenes of Kylo and Rey were BY FAR the best scenes for both of their characters. Kylo appeared to be a cool menacing villain and scavenger Rey still had an ounce of promise and likability as a character. It's been downhill for both ever since.

She may have dreamed of someday leaving, but was still pretty attached to Jakku and kept trying to get back there in TFA. And if you look at the rags Luke was wearing on Tatooine it's not surprising he'd want to change that up just as fast as he could. :D Plus he had also become a commander by that point so had to dress the part.

I don't think that influenced the look of Rey. Since it would have been very easy to CG over her outfit if they needed to - which they certainly did if any of Daisy Ridley's performance from TFA was used in this.

Leia got a new CG'ed outfit for this film, and it's quite different than the outfits she wore throughout TFA.

It's funny how often when ST filmmakers are using an OT item they either reverse the color scheme or add a splash of red to it to make it "new" - 3PO with the red arm, the TFA TIE with the splash of red - now Luke's training remote gets the red treatment.

Yeah, it makes little sense that she seems to somehow get subtle reboots of her original Jakku outfit while on the run with strangers.

And yeah, the arm wraps are such fashion-plate stuff - no practical reason at all. And the hoodie and that backpack is hard to take seriously. Her outfits always look like Melania Trump contracted a NYC fashion designer to create a Luke Skywalker-inspired outfit.

But the lack of outfit evolution always says to me they really have no clue about what Rey's journey is supposed to be. There's a good deal of symbolism to Luke's various outfits as signposts to his journey and growth.

What do you mean by "rags"? Luke's outfit may be understandably a bit dusty in a few scenes, but they never resemble rags. Most of it almost seems new.

I'd agree with you about Rey. But I think Kylo is actually a very well written character, and the only well written character in the trilogy. He is trying to be Vader so bad, but he just isn't him. His insecurities and his lack of confidence actually make him extremely relatable and it made me realize that HE is the real main character in this trilogy and not Rey. The entire story is about him. She is just there as an external influence to push him forward.

The reason it feels so weird is that it is done unintentionally (because Disney Lucasfilm have no clue what they're doing). The story is from Rey's PoV for the most part, but its not about her.

It blew my mind when I realized it. Even my wife noticed this and always thought Rey was uninteresting and took a backseat to Kylo. The ST became much more enjoyable when I stopped looking for Rey to be the focus.

It was just a huge, shapeless tunic over some yellowish jeans. It may have been serviceable enough on Tatooine, but it's not what I would call an inspired design. And even next to other ANH outfits it looked very basic.

I agree with davejames overall.

I think there was definitely an evolution to her outfits. Although I'm a little surprised the new look seems like a slight step back to the TFA look. But I'm wondering if they did that to
make the Dark Rey all black look seem that much more dramatic against her all white look.
However, Han didn't change his look too much from movie to movie.

I also see how the filmmakers keep a color palette from the character. Luke went from white and beige in ANH to beige in ESB, even in his Hoth outfit. The big jarring jump was for ROTJ. Leia also stayed in with the white look in ANH and ESB (Bespin dress notwithstanding) and didn't change dramatically til ROTJ. Han kept his basic look in all 3.

LOL, even in the Back to the Future movies, notice how Marty's outfits all have the same color palette throughout his time travels!

Yeah I agree he might be the more interesting character, but personally I still find Rey a compelling character to watch as this scavenger living a life of solitude who suddenly finds herself in a much larger world, meeting living legends like Han and Luke, and coming to terms with her newfound powers, all while still being haunted by the abandonment of her parents. And of course Ridley's charming performance makes her pretty darn hard not to like.

Yeah Luke probably developed a lot more during the OT, but he also started out from a much more naive and innocent place so had a lot further to go. And those movies also had some major time jumps between each one, where a lot of maturity seemed to happen off screen.
