Re: Hot Toys - TMSXXX - Star Wars The Mandalorian - Artillery Stormtrooper
Since 1983 I've thought of Star Wars films as glorified adverts for toys. Really good adverts, mind you, because they worked!
It was really brought home to me as a child, standing in the dedicated Star Wars section of Debenhams the department store. The racks were massed with a huge variety of Kenner figures and vehicles, and a television placed high up was playing scenes from Return of the Jedi on continual repeat.
So, every new character design, or every little variation with a Stormtrooper was a potential for merchandise.
The business model is well on display in super hero movies, where a character's costume will change between films, sometimes just subtle enough to justify a new piece of merchandise.
And so they get us with the media, and with the toys. But only if the designs are appealing.
Well, Lucas made his fortune partly due to toys and merchandise, so it is a cash cow that never runs dry that a lot of people have blessed him for since 1977.
